Chapter 19

Verse 1
And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;

that when
Mark 10:1; John 10:40
he departed
This was our Lord's final departure from Galilee, previous to his crucifixion; but he appears to have taken in a large compass in his journey, and passed through the districts east of Jordan. Some learned men, however, are of opinion, that instead of "beyond Jordan," we should render, "by the side of Jordan," as [peran (peŃran)] especially with a genitive, sometimes signifies.

Verse 2
And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
4:23-25; 9:35,36; 12:15; 14:35,36; 15:30,31; Mark 6:55,56

Verse 3
The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

[zeugos (zeu=gov)] "hath yoked together," as oxen in the plough, where each must pull equally in order to bring it on. Among the ancients, they put a yoke upon the necks of a new married couple, or chains on their arms, to shew that they were to be one, closely united, and pulling equally together in all the concerns of life.

Verse 7
They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?

So in the Koran, "The impious, who in his arrogance shall accuse our doctrine of falsity, shall find the gates of heaven shut; nor shall he enter till a camel shall pass through the eye of a needle." It was a common mode of expression among the Jews to declare any thing that was rare or difficult.
