1 Now I, R346 Paul, myself urge R347 you by the meekness R348 and gentleness of Christ--I who am R349 meek F71 when face to face with you, but bold toward you when absent! 2 I ask that when R350 I am present I need not be bold with the confidence with which I propose to be courageous against some, R351 who regard us as if we walked according R352 to the flesh. 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according R353 to the flesh, 4 for the weapons R354 of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely F72 powerful for R355 the destruction of fortresses. 5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty R356 thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience R357 of Christ, 6 and we are ready to punish all disobedience, whenever your R358 obedience is complete.

7 You R359 F73 are looking at things F74 as they are outwardly. If R360 anyone is confident in himself that he is Christ's, let him consider this again within himself, that just as he is Christ's, so R361 also are we. 8 For even if I R362 boast somewhat further F75 about our authority, R363 which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be put to shame, 9 for F76 I do not wish to seem as if I would terrify you by my letters. 10 For they say, "His letters are weighty and strong, but his personal F77 presence is unimpressive R364 and his R365 speech contemptible." 11 Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when absent, such persons we are also in deed when present.

12 For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some F78 of those who commend R366 themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding. 13 But we will not boast beyond R367 our measure, but within R368 F79 the measure of the sphere which God apportioned to us as a measure, to reach even as far as you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as if we did not reach to you, for we R369 were the first to come even as far as you in the gospel R370 of Christ; 15 not boasting beyond R371 our measure, that is, in other R372 men's labors, but with the hope that as your R373 faith grows, we will be, within F80 our sphere, enlarged R374 even more by you, 16 so as to preach R375 the gospel even to the R376 regions beyond you, and not to boast in R377 F81 what has been accomplished in the sphere of another. 17 But HE WHO BOASTS IS TO BOAST IN THE LORD. 18 For it is not he who commends R379 himself that is approved, but he whom R380 the Lord commends.

11:1-33 - Study Chapter  - Click for Chapter Audio

1 I wish that you would bear R381 with me in a little foolishness; R382 but indeed F82 you are bearing with me. 2 For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed R383 you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present R384 you as a pure virgin. 3 But I am afraid that, as the serpent R385 deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. 4 For if one F83 comes and preaches another R386 Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different R387 spirit which you have not received, or a different R388 gospel which you have not accepted, you bear R389 this beautifully. R390

5 For I consider myself not R391 in the least inferior to the most F84 eminent apostles. 6 But even if I am unskilled R392 in speech, yet I am not so in knowledge; R393 in fact, in every way we have made R394 this evident to you in all things. 7 Or did R395 I commit a sin in humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached the gospel R396 of God to you without R397 charge? 8 I robbed other churches by taking R398 wages from them to serve you; 9 and when I was present with you and was in need, I was not R399 a burden to anyone; for when the R400 brethren came from Macedonia R401 they fully supplied my need, and in everything I kept myself from being R399 a burden to you, and F85 will continue to do so. 10 As R402 the truth of Christ is in me, this R403 boasting of mine will not be stopped in the regions of Achaia. R404 11 Why? Because R405 I do not love you? God R406 knows I do! 12 But what I am doing I will continue to do, so R407 that I may cut off opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded F86 just as we are in the matter about which they are boasting. 13 For such men are false R408 apostles, deceitful R409 workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 No wonder, for even Satan R410 disguises himself as an angel R411 of light. 15 Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose R412 end will be according to their deeds.

16 Again R413 I say, let no one think me foolish; but if you do, receive me even as foolish, so that I also may boast a little. 17 What I am saying, I am not saying as R414 F87 the Lord would, but as in R415 foolishness, in this confidence of boasting. 18 Since many R416 boast according R417 to the flesh, I will boast also. 19 For you, being R418 so wise, tolerate the foolish gladly. 20 For you tolerate it if anyone enslaves R419 you, anyone devours R420 you, anyone takes R421 advantage of you, anyone exalts R422 himself, anyone hits R423 you in the face. 21 To my shame R424 I must say that we have been weak R425 by comparison. But in whatever respect anyone else is R426 bold--I speak R427 in foolishness--I am just as bold myself.

22 Are they Hebrews? R428 So R429 am I. Are they Israelites? R430 So R430 am I. Are they descendants R431 F88 of Abraham? So R432 am I. 23 Are they servants R433 of Christ?--I speak as if insane--I more so; in far R434 F89 more labors, in far R435 F89 more imprisonments, beaten R436 F90 times without number, often in danger R437 of death. 24 Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine R438 lashes. 25 Three times I was beaten R439 with rods, once I was stoned, R440 three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep. 26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, R441 dangers from the Gentiles, R442 dangers in the city, R443 dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false R444 brethren; 27 I have been in labor R445 and hardship, through F91 many sleepless nights, in hunger R446 and thirst, often without R447 food, in cold and exposure. R448 F92 28 Apart from such external F93 things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all R449 the churches. 29 Who is weak R450 without my being weak? Who is led F94 into sin without F95 my intense concern? 30 If I have to boast, I will boast of what pertains to my weakness. R451 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, He R452 who is blessed forever, knows R453 that I am not lying. 32 In Damascus R454 the ethnarch under Aretas the king was guarding R455 the city of the Damascenes in order to seize me, 33 and I was let down in a basket through R456 a window in F96 the wall, and so escaped his hands.

12:1-21 - Study Chapter  - Click for Chapter Audio

1 Boasting R457 is necessary, though it is not profitable; but I will go on to visions and revelations R458 of F97 the Lord. 2 I know a man in R459 Christ who fourteen years ago--whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, God R460 knows--such a man was caught R461 up to the third R462 heaven. 3 And I know how such a man--whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God R463 knows-- 4 was caught R464 up into Paradise R465 and heard inexpressible words, which a man is not permitted to speak. 5 On R466 behalf of such a man I will boast; but on my own behalf I will not boast, except in regard to my weaknesses. R467 6 For if I do wish to boast I will not be foolish, R468 for R469 I will be speaking the truth; but I refrain from this, so that no one will credit me with more than he sees in me or hears from me. 7 Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, R470 for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn R471 in the flesh, a messenger R472 of Satan to torment F98 me--to keep me from exalting myself! 8 Concerning this I implored the Lord three R473 times that it might leave me. 9 And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power R474 is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast R475 about F99 my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore I R476 am well content with weaknesses, with insults, F100 with distresses, R477 with persecutions, R478 with difficulties, R477 for R479 Christ's sake; for when R480 I am weak, then I am strong.

11 I have become foolish; R481 you yourselves compelled me. Actually I should have been commended by you, for in R482 no respect was I inferior to the most F101 eminent apostles, even though I R483 am a nobody. 12 The signs R484 F102 of F103 a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs F102 and wonders and miracles. F104 13 For in what respect were you treated as inferior to the rest of the churches, except that I R485 myself did not become a burden to you? Forgive me this R486 wrong! 14 Here for R487 this third time I am ready to come to you, and I will R488 not be a burden to you; for I do R489 not seek what is yours, but you; R490 for children R491 are not responsible to save up for their parents, but parents R492 for their children. 15 I will most R493 gladly spend and be expended for your souls. If I R494 love you more, am I to be loved less? 16 But be that as it may, I did R495 not burden you myself; nevertheless, crafty fellow that I am, I took R496 you in by deceit. 17 Certainly R497 I have not taken advantage of you through any of those whom I have sent to you, have I? 18 I urged R498 Titus R499 to go, and I sent the R500 brother with him. Titus did not take any advantage of you, did he? Did we not conduct F105 ourselves in F106 the same spirit R501 and walk in R502 the same steps? 19 All this time you F107 have been thinking that we are defending ourselves to you. Actually, it R503 is in the sight of God that we have been speaking in Christ; and all R504 for your upbuilding, beloved. R505 20 For I am afraid that perhaps when R506 I come I may find you to be not what I wish and may be found by you to be not what you wish; that perhaps there will be strife, R507 jealousy, angry R508 tempers, disputes, R509 slanders, R510 gossip, R511 arrogance, R512 disturbances; R513 21 I am afraid that when I come again my God may humiliate me before you, and I may mourn over many of those who have sinned R514 in the past and not repented of the impurity, R515 immorality F108 and sensuality which they have practiced.

13:1-14 - Study Chapter  - Click for Chapter Audio

1 This R516 is the third time I am coming to you. EVERY FACT IS TO BE CONFIRMED BY THE TESTIMONY OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES. 2 I have previously said when present the second time, and though now absent I say in advance to those who have sinned R518 in the past and to all the rest as well, that if R519 I come again I will not spare R520 anyone, 3 since you are seeking R521 for proof of the Christ R522 who speaks in me, and who is not weak toward you, but mighty R523 in you. 4 For indeed He was crucified R524 because of weakness, yet He lives because R525 of the power of God. For we also are weak R526 in F112 Him, yet we R527 will live with Him because of the power of God directed toward you. 5 Test R528 yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine R529 yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you--unless indeed you fail R530 F113 the test? 6 But I trust that you will realize that we ourselves do F114 not fail the test.

7 Now we pray to God that you do no wrong; not that we ourselves may appear approved, but that you may do what is right, even though we may appear F115 unapproved. 8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but only for the truth. 9 For we rejoice when we ourselves are weak R531 but you are strong; this we also pray for, that F116 you be made R532 complete. 10 For this reason I am writing these things while absent, so that when present I R533 need not use severity, R534 in accordance with the authority R535 which the Lord gave me for building up and not for tearing down.

11 Finally, R536 brethren, rejoice, F117 be R537 F118 made complete, be comforted, be R538 like-minded, live R539 in peace; and the R540 God of love and peace will be with you. 12 Greet R541 one another with a holy kiss. 13 All R542 the saints F119 greet you. 14 The R543 grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love R544 of God, and the fellowship R545 of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
