First Missionary Journey

1 Now there were at Antioch, R684 in the church R685 that was there, prophets R686 and teachers: R687 Barnabas, R688 and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, R689 and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod R690 the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the R691 Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas R692 and Saul for the R693 work to which I have called them." 3 Then, when they had fasted and prayed R694 and laid R695 their hands on them, they R696 sent them away.

4 So, being sent R697 out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there they sailed to Cyprus. R698 5 When they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the R699 synagogues of the Jews; and they also had John R700 as their helper. 6 When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a magician, R701 a Jewish false R702 prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus, 7 who was with the proconsul, R703 Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the magician R704 (for so his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the proconsul R705 away from the R706 faith. 9 But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled R707 F306 with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him, 10 and said, "You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son R708 of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the R709 straight ways of the Lord? 11 "Now, behold, the R710 hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and not see the sun for a time." And immediately a mist and a darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those who would lead him by the hand. 12 Then the proconsul R711 believed when he saw what had happened, being amazed at the R712 teaching of the Lord.

13 Now Paul and his companions put out to sea from Paphos R713 and came to Perga R714 in Pamphylia; R715 but John R716 left them and returned to Jerusalem. 14 But going on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian R717 Antioch, R718 and on the R719 Sabbath day they went into the R720 synagogue and sat down. 15 After the R721 reading of the Law and the R722 Prophets the R723 synagogue officials sent to them, saying, "Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it." 16 Paul stood up, and motioning R724 with his hand said,

"Men of Israel, and you R725 who fear God, listen: 17 "The God of this people Israel chose R726 our fathers and made R727 F307 the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He R728 led them out from it. 18 "For a R729 period of about forty years He R730 put up with them in the wilderness. 19 "When R731 He had destroyed seven R732 nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed R733 their land as an inheritance--all of which took about R734 four hundred and fifty years. 20 "After these things He gave R735 them judges until Samuel R736 the prophet. 21 "Then they asked R737 for a king, and God gave them Saul R738 the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 "After He had removed R739 him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, `I R740 HAVE FOUND DAVID the son of Jesse, A MAN AFTER MY HEART, who will do all My will.' F308 23 "From R741 the descendants of this man, according R742 to promise, God has brought to Israel a R743 Savior, Jesus, 24 after John R744 had proclaimed before His F309 coming a baptism R745 of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 "And while John was R746 completing his course, he R747 kept saying, `What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. But behold, one is coming after me the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.'

26 "Brethren, sons of Abraham's family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of this R748 salvation has been sent. 27 "For those who live in Jerusalem, and their rulers, R749 recognizing R750 neither Him nor the utterances F310 of the R751 prophets which are read R752 every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning Him. 28 "And though they found no ground for putting Him to death, they asked R753 Pilate that He be executed. F311 29 "When they had carried R754 out all that was written concerning Him, they R755 took Him down from the R756 cross F312 and laid R757 Him in a tomb. 30 "But God raised R758 Him from the dead; 31 and for many days He R759 appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now His R760 witnesses to the people. 32 "And we preach R761 to you the good news of the R762 promise made to the fathers, 33 that God has fulfilled this promise to F313 our children in that He raised R763 up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, `YOU R764 ARE MY SON; TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.' 34 "As for the fact that He raised R765 Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: `I R766 WILL GIVE YOU THE HOLY and SURE F314 blessings OF DAVID.' 35 "Therefore He also says in another Psalm, `YOU R767 WILL NOT ALLOW F315 YOUR HOLY F316 ONE TO UNDERGO F317 DECAY.' 36 "For David, R768 after he had served F318 the R769 purpose of God in his own generation, fell R770 asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent F319 decay; 37 but He whom God raised R771 did not undergo F320 decay. 38 "Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through R772 Him F321 forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and through F322 Him everyone R773 who believes is freed F323 from F324 all things, from which you could not be freed F323 through F324 the Law of Moses. 40 "Therefore take heed, so that the thing spoken of in R774 the Prophets may not come upon you:

42 As Paul F326 and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these things F327 might be spoken to them the next Sabbath. R776 43 Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God-fearing R777 proselytes R778 F328 followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the R779 grace of God.

Paul Turns to the Gentiles

44 The next Sabbath R780 nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of the F329 Lord. 45 But when the R781 Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming. F330 46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; R782 since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we R783 are turning to the Gentiles. 47 "For so the Lord has commanded us, `I R784 HAVE PLACED YOU AS A LIGHT R785 FOR THE GENTILES, THAT YOU MAY BRING F331 SALVATION TO THE END OF THE EARTH.' "

48 When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the R786 word of the F332 Lord; and as many as had R787 been appointed to eternal life believed. 49 And the R788 word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region. 50 But the R789 Jews incited the devout R790 F333 women of R791 prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district. F334 51 But they R792 shook off the dust of their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium. R793 52 And the disciples were continually filled R794 with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
