1:1-11 - Study Chapter  - Click for Chapter Audio

1 The word of the LORD which came to Hosea R1 the son of Beeri, during the days of Uzziah, R2 Jotham, R3 Ahaz R4 and Hezekiah, R5 kings of Judah, and during the days of Jeroboam R6 the son of Joash, king of Israel.

2 When the LORD first spoke through Hosea, the LORD said to Hosea, "Go, R7 take to yourself a wife of harlotry and have children of harlotry; for the R8 land commits flagrant harlotry, forsaking F1 the LORD." 3 So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore R9 him a son. 4 And the LORD said to him, "Name him Jezreel; R10 for yet a little while, and I R11 will punish F2 the house of Jehu for the bloodshed of Jezreel, and I R12 will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. 5 "On that day I will break R13 the bow of Israel in the valley R14 of Jezreel." 6 Then she conceived again and gave birth to a daughter. And the F3 LORD said to him, "Name her Lo-ruhamah, F4 for I will no longer have R15 compassion on the house of Israel, that I would ever forgive them. 7 "But I will have compassion R16 on the house of Judah and deliver R17 them by the LORD their God, and will not deliver them by bow, R18 sword, battle, horses or horsemen."

8 When she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived and gave birth to a son. 9 And the F5 LORD said, "Name him Lo-ammi, F6 for you are not My people and I am not your F7 God." 10 Yet F8 the number of the sons of Israel Will be like the sand R19 of the sea, Which cannot be measured or numbered; And in R20 the place Where it is said to them, "You are not R21 My people," It will be said to them, "You are the sons R22 of the living God." 11 And the sons R23 of Judah and the sons of Israel will be gathered R24 together, And they will appoint for themselves one R25 leader, And they will go up from the land, For great will be the day of Jezreel.

2:1-23 - Study Chapter  - Click for Chapter Audio

1 Say F9 to your brothers, "Ammi," F10 and to your sisters, "Ruhamah." F11 2 "Contend with your mother, contend, R26 For she is not R27 my wife, and I am not her husband; And let her put away her harlotry R28 from her face And her adultery from between her breasts, 3 Or I will strip her naked R29 And expose her as on the day R30 when she was born. I will also make R31 her like a wilderness, Make her like desert land And slay her with thirst. R32 4 "Also, I will have no compassion on her children, Because they are children R33 of harlotry. 5 "For their mother has played R34 the harlot; She who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, `I R34 will go after my lovers, Who give R35 me my bread and my water, My wool and my flax, my oil R36 and my drink.'

6 "Therefore, behold, I will hedge R37 up her F12 way with thorns, R38 And I will build a F13 wall against her so that she cannot find her paths. R39 7 "She will pursue R40 her lovers, but she will not overtake them; And she will seek them, but will not find them. Then she will say, `I R41 will go back to my first R42 husband, For it was better R43 for me then than now!' 8 "For she does not R44 know that it was I R45 who gave her the grain, the new wine and the oil, And lavished on her silver and gold, Which they used F14 for Baal. 9 "Therefore, I will take R46 back My grain at harvest F15 time And My new wine in its season. I will also take away My wool and My flax Given to cover her nakedness. 10 "And then I will uncover R47 her lewdness In the sight of her lovers, And no one will rescue her out of My hand. 11 "I will also put R48 an end to all her gaiety, Her feasts, R49 her new R50 moons, her sabbaths And all her festal assemblies. 12 "I will destroy R51 her vines and fig trees, Of which she said, `These are my wages Which my lovers have given me.' And I will make R52 them a forest, And the beasts R53 of the field will devour them. 13 "I will punish her for the days R54 of the Baals When she used to offer R55 F16 sacrifices to them And adorn R56 herself with her earrings F17 and jewelry, And follow her lovers, so that she forgot R57 Me," declares the LORD.

14 "Therefore, behold, I will allure her, Bring R58 her into the wilderness And speak kindly F18 to her. 15 "Then I will give her her vineyards R59 from there, And the R60 valley of Achor as a door of hope. And she will sing R61 F19 there as in the days of her youth, As in the day R62 when she came up from the land of Egypt. 16 "It will come about in that day," declares the LORD, "That you will call Me Ishi R63 F20 And will no longer call Me Baali. F21 17 "For I R64 will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, So that they will be mentioned F22 by their names no more. 18 "In that day I will also make a covenant for them With the beasts R65 of the field, The birds of the sky And the creeping things of the ground. And I will abolish R66 F23 the bow, the sword and war from the land, And will make them lie R67 down in safety. 19 "I will betroth R68 you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness R69 and in justice, In lovingkindness and in compassion, 20 And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness. Then you will know R70 the LORD. 21 "It will come about in that day that I R71 will respond," declares the LORD. "I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth, 22 And the earth R72 will respond to the grain, to the new wine and to the oil, And they will respond to Jezreel. F24 23 "I will sow R73 her for Myself in the land. I R74 will also have compassion on her F25 who had not obtained compassion, And I R75 will say to those F26 who were not R76 My people, `You are My people!' And they F27 will say, `You are my God!' "

1 Then the LORD said to me, "Go again, love a woman F28 who is loved by her husband, F29 yet an adulteress, even as R77 the LORD loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes." R78 2 So I bought R79 her for myself for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer and a half F30 of barley. 3 Then I said to her, "You shall stay R80 with me for many days. You shall not play the harlot, nor shall you have a man; F31 so I will also be toward you." 4 For the sons of Israel will remain for many days without R81 king or prince, without R82 sacrifice or sacred pillar R83 and without ephod R84 or household R85 F32 idols. 5 Afterward the sons of Israel will return R86 and seek the LORD their God and David R87 their king; and they R88 will come trembling to the LORD and to His goodness in the last days.
