1 This is the message which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch R2191 the son of Neriah, when he had written R2192 down these words in a book at F467 Jeremiah's dictation, in the fourth R2193 year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying: 2 "Thus says the LORD the God of Israel to you, O Baruch: 3 `You said, "Ah, woe is me! For the LORD has added sorrow to my pain; I am weary R2194 with my groaning and have found no rest."' 4 "Thus you are to say to him, `Thus says the LORD, "Behold, what R2195 I have built I am about to tear down, and what I have planted I am about to uproot, that is, the whole land." 5 `But you, are you seeking R2196 great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for behold, I am going to bring R2197 disaster on all flesh,' declares the LORD, `but I will give R2198 your life to you as booty in all the places where you may go.' "

1 That which came as the word of the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet concerning R2199 the nations. 2 To Egypt, R2200 concerning the army of Pharaoh R2201 Neco king of Egypt, which was by the Euphrates River at Carchemish, R2202 which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in the fourth R2203 year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: 3 "Line R2204 up the shield and buckler, F468 And draw near for the battle! 4 "Harness the horses, And mount F469 the steeds, And take your stand with helmets on! Polish R2205 the spears, Put on the scale-armor! R2206 5 "Why have I seen it? They are terrified, They are drawing R2207 back, And their mighty R2208 men are defeated And have taken refuge in flight, Without facing back; Terror R2209 F470 is on every side!" Declares the LORD. 6 Let not the swift R2210 man flee, Nor the mighty man escape; In the north beside the river Euphrates They have stumbled R2211 and fallen. 7 Who is this that rises R2212 like the Nile, Like the rivers whose waters surge about? 8 Egypt rises like the Nile, Even like the rivers whose waters surge about; And He has said, "I will rise R2213 and cover that land; I will surely destroy R2214 the city and its inhabitants." 9 Go up, you horses, and drive R2215 F471 madly, you chariots, That the mighty men may march F472 forward: Ethiopia and Put, R2216 F473 that handle the shield, And the Lydians, R2217 F474 that handle and bend the bow. 10 For that R2218 day belongs to the Lord GOD of hosts, A day of vengeance, R2219 so as to avenge Himself on His foes; And the sword R2220 will devour and be satiated And drink F476 its fill of their blood; For there will be a slaughter R2221 for the Lord GOD of hosts, In the land of the north by the river Euphrates. 11 Go up R2222 to Gilead and obtain balm, O R2223 virgin daughter of Egypt! In vain have you multiplied remedies; F477 There is no R2224 healing for you.

12 The nations have heard of your shame, R2225 And the earth is full of your cry R2226 of distress; For one warrior R2227 has stumbled over another, F478 And both of them have fallen down together. 13 This is the message F479 which the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming R2228 of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to smite R2229 the land of Egypt: 14 "Declare in Egypt and proclaim in Migdol, R2230 Proclaim also in Memphis and Tahpanhes; R2231 Say, `Take your stand and get yourself ready, For the sword R2232 has devoured those around you.' 15 "Why have your mighty R2233 ones become prostrate? They do not stand because the LORD has thrust R2234 them down. 16 "They have repeatedly stumbled; R2235 Indeed, they have fallen one against another. Then they said, `Get up! And let R2236 us go back To our own people and our native land Away from the sword R2237 F480 of the oppressor.' 17 "They F481 cried there, `Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a R2238 big noise; He has let the appointed time pass by!' 18 "As I live," declares the King R2239 Whose name is the LORD of hosts, "Surely one shall come who looms up like Tabor R2240 among the mountains, Or like Carmel R2241 by the sea. 19 "Make your baggage ready for exile, R2242 O daughter R2243 dwelling in Egypt, For Memphis R2244 will become a desolation; It will even be burned down and bereft F482 of inhabitants. 20 "Egypt is a pretty heifer, R2245 But a horsefly F483 is coming from R2246 the north--it is coming! 21 "Also her mercenaries R2247 in her midst Are like fattened F484 calves, R2248 For even they too have turned back and have fled away together; They did not stand their ground. For the day of their calamity has come upon them, The time of their punishment. R2249 22 "Its sound moves along like a serpent; For they move on like F485 an army And come to her as woodcutters with axes. 23 "They have cut down her forest," R2250 declares the LORD; "Surely it will no more be found, Even though they F486 are now more numerous than locusts R2251 And are without number. 24 "The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame, Given over to the power F487 of the people R2252 of the north." 25 The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says, "Behold, I am going to punish Amon of Thebes, R2253 and Pharaoh, R2254 and Egypt along with her gods R2255 and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who trust R2256 in him. 26 "I shall give them over to the power F488 of those who are seeking R2257 their lives, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his officers. F489 Afterwards, R2258 however, it will be inhabited as in the days of old," declares the LORD. 27 "But as for you, O Jacob My servant, do R2259 not fear, Nor be dismayed, O Israel! For, see, I am going to save R2260 you from afar, And your descendants from the land of their captivity; And Jacob will return and be undisturbed R2261 And secure, with no one making him tremble. 28 "O Jacob My servant, do not fear," declares the LORD, "For I R2262 am with you. For I will make a full end of all the nations Where I have driven you, Yet I will not R2263 make a full end of you; But I will correct R2264 you properly And by no means leave you unpunished."

1 That which came as the word of the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, R2265 before Pharaoh conquered F490 Gaza. R2266 2 Thus says the LORD: "Behold, waters are going to rise from the R2267 north And become an overflowing torrent, And overflow R2268 the land and all its fullness, The city and those who live in it; And the men will cry R2269 out, And every inhabitant of the land will wail. 3 "Because of the noise of the galloping R2270 F491 hoofs of his stallions, F492 The tumult of his chariots, and the rumbling of his wheels, The fathers have not turned back for their children, Because of the limpness of their hands, 4 On account of the day that is coming To destroy R2271 all the Philistines, To cut off from Tyre R2272 and Sidon Every ally that is left; For the LORD is going to destroy the Philistines, The remnant of the coastland of Caphtor. R2273 5 "Baldness R2274 has come upon Gaza; Ashkelon R2275 has been ruined. O remnant of their valley, How long will you gash R2276 yourself? 6 "Ah, sword R2277 of the LORD, How long will you not be quiet? Withdraw into your sheath; Be at rest and stay still. 7 "How can it F493 be quiet, When the LORD has given R2278 it an order? Against Ashkelon and against the seacoast-- There He has assigned R2279 it."

1 Concerning Moab. R2280 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, "Woe to Nebo, R2281 for it has been destroyed; Kiriathaim R2282 has been put to shame, it has been captured; The lofty stronghold has been put to shame and shattered. F494 2 "There is praise for Moab no longer; In Heshbon R2283 they have devised calamity against her: `Come and let us cut her off from being a nation!' You too, Madmen, F495 will be silenced; The sword will follow after you. 3 "The sound of an outcry from Horonaim, R2284 `Devastation and great destruction!' 4 "Moab is broken, Her little ones have sounded out a cry of distress. 5 "For by the ascent of Luhith R2285 They will ascend with continual weeping; For at the descent of Horonaim They have heard the anguished F496 cry of destruction. 6 "Flee, R2286 save your lives, That you may be like a juniper in the wilderness. 7 "For because of your trust R2287 in your own achievements and treasures, Even you yourself will be captured; And Chemosh R2288 will go off into exile Together with his priests and his princes. 8 "A destroyer will come to every city, So that no city will escape; The valley also will be ruined And the plateau R2289 will be destroyed, As the LORD has said. 9 "Give wings R2290 F497 to Moab, For she will flee F498 away; And her cities will become a desolation, R2291 Without inhabitants in them. 10 "Cursed R2292 be the one who does the LORD'S work negligently, R2293 And cursed be the one who restrains his sword R2294 from blood. 11 "Moab has been at R2295 ease since his youth; He has also been undisturbed, R2296 like wine on its F499 dregs, And he has not been emptied R2297 from vessel to vessel, Nor has he gone into exile. Therefore he F500 retains his flavor, And his aroma has not changed. 12 "Therefore behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will send to him those who tip vessels, and they will tip him over, and they will empty his vessels and shatter his F501 jars. 13 "And Moab will be ashamed R2298 of Chemosh, R2299 as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, R2300 their confidence.

14 "How can you say, `We are mighty R2301 warriors, And men valiant for battle'? 15 "Moab has been destroyed and men F502 have gone up to his F503 cities; His choicest young R2302 F504 men have also gone down to the slaughter," Declares the King, R2303 whose name is the LORD of hosts. 16 "The disaster of Moab will soon R2304 come, And his calamity has swiftly hastened. 17 "Mourn for him, all you who live around him, Even all of you who know his name; Say, `How has the mighty scepter R2305 F505 been broken, A staff of splendor!' 18 "Come R2306 down from your glory And sit on F506 the parched ground, O daughter R2307 dwelling in Dibon, R2308 For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you, He has ruined your strongholds. 19 "Stand by the road and keep watch, O inhabitant of Aroer; R2309 Ask R2310 him who flees and her who escapes And say, `What has happened?' 20 "Moab has been put to shame, for it has been shattered. F507 Wail and cry out; Declare by the Arnon R2311 That Moab has been destroyed. 21 "Judgment has also come upon the plain, upon Holon, Jahzah R2312 and against Mephaath, R2313 22 against Dibon, Nebo and Beth-diblathaim, 23 against Kiriathaim, Beth-gamul and Beth-meon, R2314 24 against Kerioth, R2315 Bozrah and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near. 25 "The horn R2316 of Moab has been cut off and his arm R2317 broken," declares the LORD. 26 "Make R2318 him drunk, for he has become F508 arrogant R2319 toward the LORD; so Moab will wallow F509 in his vomit, and he also will become a laughingstock. 27 "Now was not Israel a laughingstock R2320 to you? Or was he caught R2321 F510 among thieves? For each time you speak about him you shake R2322 your head in scorn. 28 "Leave the cities and dwell among the crags, R2323 O inhabitants of Moab, And be like a dove R2324 that nests Beyond the mouth of the chasm. 29 "We R2325 have heard of the pride of Moab--he is very proud-- Of his haughtiness, his pride, R2326 his arrogance and his F511 self-exaltation. 30 "I know his fury," R2327 declares the LORD, "But it is futile; His idle boasts have accomplished nothing. 31 "Therefore I will wail R2328 for Moab, Even for all Moab will I cry out; I F512 will moan for the men of Kir-heres. R2329 32 "More than the weeping R2330 for Jazer R2331 I will weep for you, O vine of Sibmah! Your tendrils stretched across the sea, They reached to the sea of Jazer; Upon your summer fruits and your grape harvest The destroyer has fallen. 33 "So gladness R2332 and joy are taken away From the fruitful field, even from the land of Moab. And I have made the wine to cease R2333 from the wine presses; No one will tread them with shouting, The shouting will not be shouts of joy. 34 "From R2334 the outcry at Heshbon even to Elealeh, R2335 even to Jahaz they have raised F513 their voice, from Zoar R2336 even to Horonaim and to Eglath-shelishiyah; for even the waters of Nimrim will become desolate. 35 "I will make an end of Moab," declares the LORD, "the one who offers sacrifice on the high R2337 place and the one who burns R2338 F514 incense to his gods. 36 "Therefore My heart R2339 wails F515 for Moab like flutes; My heart also wails F515 like flutes for the men of Kir-heres. Therefore they have lost R2340 the abundance it produced. 37 "For every R2341 head is bald and every beard cut short; there are gashes on all the hands and sackcloth R2342 on the loins. 38 "On all the housetops R2343 of Moab and in its streets there F516 is lamentation everywhere; for I have broken Moab like an undesirable vessel," R2344 declares the LORD. 39 "How shattered F517 it is! How they have wailed! How Moab has turned his back--he is ashamed! So Moab will become a laughingstock and an object R2345 of terror to all around him." 40 For thus says the LORD: "Behold, one will fly R2346 swiftly like an eagle And spread R2347 out his wings against Moab. 41 "Kerioth has been captured And the strongholds have been seized, So the hearts R2348 of the mighty men of Moab in that day Will be like the heart of a woman R2349 in labor. 42 "Moab will be destroyed R2350 from being a people Because he has become F518 arrogant R2351 toward the LORD. 43 "Terror, R2352 pit and snare are coming upon you, O inhabitant of Moab," declares the LORD. 44 "The one who flees R2353 from the terror Will fall into the pit, And the one who climbs up out of the pit Will be caught in the snare; For I shall bring upon her, even upon Moab, The year of their punishment," R2354 declares the LORD. 45 "In the shadow of Heshbon The fugitives stand without strength; For a fire has gone forth from Heshbon And a flame R2355 from the midst of Sihon, R2356 And it has devoured the forehead R2357 of Moab And the scalps of the riotous F519 revelers. 46 "Woe R2358 to you, Moab! The people of Chemosh R2359 have perished; For your sons have been taken away captive And your daughters into captivity. 47 "Yet I will restore R2360 the fortunes F520 of Moab In the latter F521 days," declares the LORD. Thus far the judgment on Moab.

1 Concerning the sons of Ammon. R2361 Thus says the LORD: "Does Israel have no sons? Or has he no heirs? Why then has Malcam F522 taken possession of Gad And his people settled in its cities? 2 "Therefore behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "That I will cause a trumpet R2362 F523 blast of war to be heard Against Rabbah R2363 of the sons of Ammon; And it will become a desolate heap, And her towns R2364 will be set on fire. Then Israel will take possession R2365 of his possessors," Says the LORD. 3 "Wail, O Heshbon, R2366 for Ai R2367 has been destroyed! Cry out, O daughters of Rabbah, Gird R2368 yourselves with sackcloth and lament, And rush back and forth inside the walls; For Malcam F524 will go R2369 into exile Together with his priests and his princes. 4 "How boastful R2370 you are about the valleys! Your valley is flowing away, O backsliding R2371 daughter Who trusts in her treasures, R2372 saying, `Who R2373 will come against me?' 5 "Behold, I am going to bring terror R2374 upon you," Declares the Lord GOD of hosts, "From all directions around you; And each of you will be driven R2375 out headlong, F526 With no one to gather the fugitives R2376 together. 6 "But afterward I will restore R2377 The fortunes F527 of the sons of Ammon," Declares the LORD.

7 Concerning Edom. R2378 Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Is there no longer any wisdom R2379 in Teman? R2380 Has good counsel been lost to the prudent? Has their wisdom decayed? 8 "Flee away, turn back, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Dedan, R2381 For I will F528 bring the disaster R2382 of Esau upon him At the time I punish F529 him. 9 "If R2383 grape gatherers came to you, Would they not leave gleanings? If thieves came by night, They would destroy only until F530 they had enough. 10 "But I have stripped R2384 Esau bare, I have uncovered his hiding places So that he will not be able to conceal himself; His offspring F531 has been destroyed along with his relatives F532 And his neighbors, and he R2385 is no more. 11 "Leave your orphans R2386 F533 behind, I will keep them alive; And let your widows R2387 trust in Me." 12 For thus says the LORD, "Behold, those who F534 were not sentenced to drink the cup R2388 will certainly drink it, and are you the one who will be completely R2389 acquitted? You will not be acquitted, but you will certainly drink it. 13 "For I have sworn R2390 by Myself," declares the LORD, "that Bozrah R2391 will become an object R2392 of horror, a reproach, a ruin and a curse; and all its cities will become perpetual ruins." 14 I have heard R2393 a message from the LORD, And an envoy R2394 is sent among the nations, saying, "Gather R2395 yourselves together and come against her, And rise up for battle!" 15 "For behold, I have made you small among the nations, Despised among men. 16 "As for the terror of you, The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, O you who live in the clefts of the F535 rock, R2396 Who occupy the height of the hill. Though you make your nest as high R2397 as an eagle's, I will bring R2398 you down from there," declares the LORD. 17 "Edom will become an object R2399 of horror; everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss R2400 at all its wounds. 18 "Like the overthrow R2401 of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors," says the LORD, "no R2402 one will live there, nor will a son of man reside in it. 19 "Behold, R2403 one will come up like a lion from the thickets R2404 F536 of the Jordan against a F537 perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will make him run away from it, and whoever is chosen R2405 I shall appoint over it. For who is like R2406 Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd who R2407 can stand against Me?" 20 Therefore hear the plan R2408 of the LORD which He has planned against Edom, and His purposes which He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: surely they will drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; surely He will make their pasture F538 desolate R2409 because of them. 21 The earth R2410 has quaked at the noise of their downfall. There is an outcry! The noise of it has been heard at the Red F539 Sea. 22 Behold, He F540 will mount up and swoop R2411 like an eagle and spread out His wings against F541 Bozrah; and the hearts R2412 of the mighty men of Edom in that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

23 Concerning Damascus. R2413 "Hamath R2414 and Arpad R2415 are put to shame, For they have heard bad news; They are disheartened. R2416 There is anxiety by the sea, It cannot R2417 be calmed. 24 "Damascus has become helpless; She has turned away to flee, And panic has gripped her; Distress R2418 and pangs have taken hold of her Like a woman in childbirth. 25 "How the F542 city R2419 of praise has not been deserted, The town of My joy! 26 "Therefore, her young R2420 men will fall in her streets, And all the men of war will be silenced F543 in that day," declares the LORD of hosts. 27 "I will set R2421 fire to the wall of Damascus, And it will devour the fortified F544 towers of Ben-hadad." R2422

28 Concerning Kedar R2423 and the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated. Thus says the LORD, "Arise, go up to Kedar And devastate the men R2424 F545 of the east. 29 "They will take away their tents and their flocks; They will carry off for themselves Their tent curtains, R2425 all their goods and their camels, R2426 And they will call out to one another, `Terror R2427 on every side!' 30 "Run away, flee! Dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Hazor," declares the LORD; "For Nebuchadnezzar R2428 king of Babylon has formed a plan against you And devised a scheme against you. 31 "Arise, go up against a nation which is at R2429 ease, Which lives securely," declares the LORD. "It has no R2430 gates or bars; They dwell R2431 alone. 32 "Their camels will become plunder, And their many cattle for booty, And I will scatter R2432 to all the winds those who cut R2433 the corners of their hair; And I will bring their disaster from every side," declares the LORD. 33 "Hazor will become a haunt R2434 of jackals, A desolation forever; No one will live there, Nor will a son of man reside in it."

34 That which came as the word of the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, R2435 at R2436 the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying: 35 "Thus says the LORD of hosts, `Behold, I am going to break R2437 the bow of Elam, The finest F546 of their might. 36 `I will bring upon Elam the four R2438 winds From the four ends of heaven, And will scatter R2439 them to all these winds; And there will be no nation To which the outcasts of Elam will not go. 37 `So I will shatter F547 Elam before their enemies And before those who seek their lives; And I will bring R2440 calamity upon them, Even My fierce R2441 anger,' declares the LORD, `And I will send R2442 out the sword after them Until I have consumed them. 38 `Then I will set My throne in Elam And destroy out F548 of it king and princes,' Declares the LORD. 39 `But it will come about in the last days That I will restore R2443 the fortunes F549 of Elam,' " Declares the LORD.

1 The word which the LORD spoke concerning Babylon, R2444 the land of the Chaldeans, through Jeremiah the prophet: 2 "Declare R2445 and proclaim among the nations. Proclaim it and lift R2446 up a standard. Do not conceal it but say, `Babylon R2447 has been captured, Bel R2448 has been put to shame, Marduk F550 has been shattered; F551 Her images R2449 have been put to shame, her idols have been shattered.' 3 "For a nation has come up against her out of the north; R2450 it will make her land an R2451 object of horror, and there will be no R2452 inhabitant in it. Both man and beast have wandered off, they have gone away! 4 "In those days and at that time," declares the LORD, "the sons of Israel will come, both they and the sons of Judah as R2453 well; they will go along weeping R2454 as they go, and it will be the R2455 LORD their God they will seek. 5 "They will ask R2456 for the way to Zion, turning their faces in F552 its direction; they F553 will F554 come that they may join themselves to the LORD in an everlasting R2457 covenant that will not be forgotten. 6 "My people have become lost R2458 sheep; Their R2459 shepherds have led them astray. They have made them turn aside on the mountains; R2460 They have gone along from mountain to hill And have forgotten their resting R2461 place. 7 "All who came upon them have devoured them; And their adversaries have said, `We R2462 are not guilty, Inasmuch as they have sinned against the LORD who is the habitation R2463 of righteousness, Even the LORD, the hope R2464 of their fathers.' 8 "Wander away from the midst R2465 of Babylon And go F555 forth from the land of the Chaldeans; Be also like male goats at F556 the head of the flock.

9 "For behold, I am going to arouse R2466 and bring up against Babylon A horde of great nations from the land of the north, And they will draw up their battle lines against her; From there she will be taken captive. Their arrows will be like an F557 expert warrior Who does not return empty-handed. 10 "Chaldea R2467 F558 will become plunder; All who plunder her will have enough," declares the LORD. 11 "Because you are glad, because you are jubilant, O you who pillage R2468 My heritage, Because you skip about like F559 a threshing heifer R2469 And neigh like stallions, F560 12 Your mother R2470 will F561 be greatly ashamed, She who gave you birth will F561 be humiliated. Behold, she will be the least of the nations, A wilderness, R2471 a parched land and a desert. 13 "Because of the indignation of the LORD she will not R2472 be inhabited, But she will be completely R2473 desolate; Everyone who passes by Babylon will R2474 be horrified And will hiss because of all her wounds. 14 "Draw up your battle lines against Babylon on every side, All you who bend F562 the bow; Shoot at her, do not be sparing with your arrows, For she has sinned R2475 against the LORD. 15 "Raise your battle cry against her on every side! She has given R2476 herself F563 up, her pillars have fallen, Her walls R2477 have been torn down. For this is the vengeance R2478 of the LORD: Take vengeance on her; As R2479 she has done to others, so do to her. 16 "Cut off the sower R2480 from Babylon And the one who wields the sickle at the time of harvest; From before the F564 sword R2481 of the oppressor They R2482 will each turn back to his own people And they will each flee to his own land. 17 "Israel is a scattered R2483 flock, F565 the lions R2484 have driven them away. The first one who devoured him was the king R2485 of Assyria, and this last one who has broken his bones is Nebuchadnezzar R2486 king of Babylon. 18 "Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: `Behold, I am going to punish the king of Babylon and his land, just as I punished R2487 the king of Assyria. 19 `And I will bring R2488 Israel back to his pasture and he will graze on Carmel and Bashan, and his desire F566 will be satisfied in the hill R2489 country of Ephraim and Gilead. 20 `In those days and at that time,' declares the LORD, `search will be made for the iniquity of Israel, but there R2490 will be none; and for the sins of Judah, but they will not be found; for I will pardon those whom R2491 I leave as a remnant.'

21 "Against the land of Merathaim, F567 go up against it, And against the inhabitants of Pekod. R2492 F568 Slay and utterly F569 destroy them," declares the LORD, "And do according to all that I have commanded you. 22 "The noise R2493 of battle is in the land, And great destruction. 23 "How the hammer R2494 of the whole earth Has been cut off and broken! How Babylon has become An object of horror among the nations! 24 "I set R2495 a snare for you and you were also caught, R2496 O Babylon, While you yourself were not aware; You have been found and also seized Because you have engaged in conflict R2497 with the LORD." 25 The LORD has opened His armory And has brought forth the weapons R2498 of His indignation, For it is a work R2499 of the Lord GOD of hosts In the land of the Chaldeans. 26 Come to her from the farthest F571 border; Open R2500 up her barns, Pile her up like heaps And utterly R2501 F572 destroy her, Let nothing be left to her. 27 Put R2502 all her young bulls to the sword; Let them go R2503 down to the slaughter! Woe be upon them, for their day R2504 has come, The time of their punishment. 28 There is a sound R2505 of fugitives and refugees from the land of Babylon, To declare in Zion the vengeance R2506 of the LORD our God, Vengeance for His temple. R2507 29 "Summon many F573 against Babylon, All those who bend F574 the bow: Encamp against her on every side, Let there be no escape. F575 Repay her according to her work; According R2508 to all that she has done, so do to her; For she has become arrogant R2509 against the LORD, Against the Holy One of Israel. 30 "Therefore her young R2510 men will fall in her streets, And all her men of war will be silenced R2511 F576 in that day," declares the LORD. 31 "Behold, I R2512 am against you, O arrogant F577 one," Declares the Lord GOD of hosts, "For your day has come, The time when F579 I will punish you. 32 "The arrogant R2513 F580 one will stumble and fall With no one to raise him up; And I will set R2514 fire to his cities And it will devour all his environs."

33 Thus says the LORD of hosts, "The sons of Israel are oppressed, And the sons of Judah as well; And all R2515 who took them captive have held them fast, They have refused to let them go. 34 "Their Redeemer R2516 is strong, the R2517 LORD of hosts is His name; He will vigorously plead R2518 their case So that He may bring R2519 rest to the F581 earth, But turmoil to the inhabitants of Babylon. 35 "A sword R2520 against the Chaldeans," declares the LORD, "And against the inhabitants of Babylon And against her officials R2521 and her wise R2522 men! 36 "A sword against the oracle R2523 priests, and they will become fools! A sword against her mighty R2524 men, and they will be shattered! R2525 F582 37 "A sword against their F583 horses R2526 and against their F583 chariots And against all the foreigners R2527 F584 who are in the midst of her, And they will become women! R2528 A sword against her treasures, and they will be plundered! 38 "A drought R2529 F585 on her waters, and they will be dried up! For it is a land of idols, R2530 And they are mad over fearsome idols. 39 "Therefore the desert R2531 creatures will live there along with the jackals; The ostriches also will live in it, And it will never R2532 again be inhabited Or dwelt in from generation to generation. 40 "As when God overthrew Sodom R2533 And Gomorrah with its neighbors," declares the LORD, "No man will live there, Nor will any son of man reside in it. 41 "Behold, a people is coming from R2534 the north, And a great nation and many kings Will be aroused from the remote parts of the earth. 42 "They seize R2535 their bow and javelin; They are cruel R2536 and have no mercy. Their voice R2537 roars like the sea; And they ride on horses, R2538 Marshalled R2539 like a man for the battle Against you, O daughter of Babylon. 43 "The king R2540 of Babylon has heard the report about them, And his hands hang limp; Distress R2541 has gripped him, Agony like a woman in childbirth. 44 "Behold, R2542 one will come up like a lion from the thicket F586 of the Jordan to a F587 perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will make them run away from it, and whoever is chosen R2543 I will appoint over it. For who is like R2544 Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd who can stand R2545 before Me?" 45 Therefore hear the plan R2546 of the LORD which He has planned against Babylon, and His purposes which He has purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: surely R2547 they will drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; surely He will make their pasture F588 desolate because of them. 46 At the shout, F589 "Babylon has been seized!" the earth R2548 is shaken, and an outcry R2549 is heard among the nations.

1 Thus says the LORD: "Behold, I am going to arouse against Babylon And against the inhabitants of Leb-kamai F590 The F591 spirit R2550 of a destroyer. 2 "I will dispatch foreigners F592 to Babylon that they may winnow R2551 her And may devastate her land; For on every side they will be opposed to her In the day of her calamity. 3 "Let F593 not him F594 who bends R2552 F595 his bow bend F595 it, Nor F593 let him rise up in his scale-armor; R2553 So do not spare her young men; Devote all her army to destruction. 4 "They will fall down slain F596 in the land of the Chaldeans, And pierced R2554 through in their streets." 5 For neither R2555 Israel nor Judah has been forsaken F597 By his God, the LORD of hosts, Although their land is full R2556 of guilt Before F598 the Holy One of Israel. 6 Flee R2557 from the midst of Babylon, And each of you save his life! Do not be destroyed R2558 F599 in her punishment, F600 For this is the LORD'S time of vengeance; He is going to render R2560 recompense to her. 7 Babylon has been a golden cup R2561 in the hand of the LORD, Intoxicating all the earth. The nations R2562 have drunk of her wine; Therefore the nations are going R2563 mad. 8 Suddenly Babylon R2564 has fallen and been broken; Wail R2565 over her! Bring R2566 balm F601 for her pain; Perhaps she may be healed. 9 We applied healing to Babylon, but she was not healed; Forsake her and let R2567 us each go to his own country, For her judgment has reached R2568 to heaven And towers F602 up to the very skies. 10 The LORD has brought R2569 about F603 our vindication; Come and let us recount R2570 in Zion The work of the LORD our God! 11 Sharpen R2571 the arrows, fill the quivers! The LORD has aroused the spirit of the kings of the Medes, Because His purpose is against Babylon to destroy it; For it is the vengeance R2572 of the LORD, vengeance for His temple. 12 Lift R2573 up a signal F604 against the walls of Babylon; Post a strong guard, Station sentries, F605 Place men in ambush! For the LORD has both purposed R2574 and performed What He spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon. 13 O you who dwell R2575 by many waters, Abundant in treasures, R2576 Your end has come, The measure F606 of your end. R2577 F607 14 The LORD of hosts has sworn by Himself: "Surely I will fill you with a population F608 like locusts, R2579 And they will cry out with shouts F609 of victory over you." 15 It is He R2580 who made the earth by His power, Who established the world by His wisdom, And by His understanding He stretched R2581 out the heavens. 16 When He utters His voice, R2582 there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, And He causes the clouds R2583 to ascend from the end of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain And brings forth the wind R2584 from His storehouses. 17 All R2585 mankind is stupid, devoid of knowledge; Every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols, F610 For his molten images are deceitful, R2586 And there is no breath in them. 18 They are worthless, R2587 a work of mockery; In the time of their punishment they will perish. 19 The portion R2588 of Jacob is not like these; For the Maker F611 of all is He, And of the tribe F612 of His inheritance; The LORD of hosts is His name. 20 He says, "You are My war-club, R2590 F613 My weapon of war; And with you I shatter R2591 nations, And with you I destroy kingdoms. 21 "With you I shatter R2592 the horse and his rider, And with you I shatter the chariot R2593 and its rider, 22 And with you I shatter man R2594 and woman, And with you I shatter old man and youth, R2595 And with you I shatter young man and virgin, 23 And with you I shatter the shepherd and his flock, And with you I shatter the farmer and his team, And with you I shatter governors and prefects. 24 "But I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea R2596 for all R2597 their evil that they have done in Zion before your eyes," declares the LORD. 25 "Behold, I R2598 am against you, O R2599 destroying mountain, Who destroys the whole earth," declares the LORD, "And I will stretch out My hand against you, And roll you down from the crags, And I will make you a burnt R2600 out mountain. 26 "They will not take from you even a stone for a corner Nor a stone for foundations, But you will be desolate R2601 forever," declares the LORD. 27 Lift R2602 up a signal F614 in the land, Blow a trumpet among the nations! Consecrate the nations against her, Summon against her the kingdoms R2603 of Ararat, R2604 Minni and Ashkenaz; R2605 Appoint a marshal against her, Bring up the horses R2606 like bristly locusts. 28 Consecrate the nations against her, The kings of the Medes, Their F615 governors and all their F615 prefects, F616 And every land of their F617 dominion. 29 So the land R2607 quakes and writhes, For the purposes of the LORD against Babylon stand, To make the land of Babylon A F618 desolation R2608 without inhabitants. 30 The mighty R2609 men of Babylon have ceased fighting, They stay in the strongholds; Their R2610 strength is exhausted, F619 They are becoming like R2610 women; Their dwelling places are set on fire, The bars R2611 of her gates are broken. 31 One courier R2612 F620 runs to meet another, F620 And one messenger R2613 F621 to meet another, F621 To tell the king of Babylon That his city has been captured from end to end; 32 The fords also have been seized, And they have burned the marshes with fire, And the men of war are terrified. 33 For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: "The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing R2614 floor At the time it F622 is stamped firm; Yet in a little while the time of harvest R2615 will come for her." 34 "Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has devoured R2616 me and crushed me, He has set me down like an empty R2617 vessel; He has swallowed R2618 me like a monster, He has filled his stomach with my delicacies; He has washed me away. 35 "May the violence R2619 done to me and to my flesh be upon Babylon," The inhabitant F623 of Zion will say; And, "May my blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea," Jerusalem will say. 36 Therefore thus says the LORD, "Behold, I am going to plead R2620 your case And exact R2621 full vengeance for you; And I R2622 will dry up her sea F624 And make her fountain dry. 37 "Babylon R2623 will become a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals, An object R2624 of horror and hissing, without inhabitants. 38 "They will roar together like young R2625 lions, They will growl like lions' cubs. 39 "When they become heated up, I will serve them their banquet And make R2626 them drunk, that they may become jubilant And may sleep R2627 a perpetual sleep And not wake up," declares the LORD. 40 "I will bring them down like lambs F625 to R2628 the slaughter, Like rams together with male goats. 41 "How Sheshak R2629 F626 has been captured, And the R2630 praise of the whole earth been seized! How Babylon has become an object of horror among the nations! 42 "The sea R2631 F627 has come up over Babylon; She has been engulfed with its tumultuous waves. 43 "Her cities have become an object R2632 of horror, A parched land and a desert, A land in which no R2633 man lives And through which no son of man passes. 44 "I R2634 will punish Bel in Babylon, And I will make what he has swallowed come R2635 out of his mouth; And the nations will no longer stream R2636 to him. Even the wall R2637 of Babylon has fallen down! 45 "Come R2638 forth from her midst, My people, And each of you save R2639 yourselves From the fierce anger of the LORD. 46 "Now so R2640 that your heart does not grow faint, And you are not afraid at the report R2641 that will be heard in the land-- For the report will come one F628 year, And after that another F629 report in another F629 year, And violence will be in the land With ruler R2642 against ruler-- 47 Therefore behold, days are coming When I will punish the idols R2643 of Babylon; And her whole land will be put R2644 to shame And all her slain will fall in her midst. 48 "Then heaven R2645 and earth and all that is in them Will shout for joy over Babylon, For the R2646 destroyers will come to her from the north," Declares the LORD. 49 Indeed R2647 Babylon is to fall for the slain of Israel, As also for Babylon the R2648 slain of all the earth have fallen. 50 You who R2649 have escaped the sword, Depart! Do not stay! Remember R2650 the LORD from afar, And let Jerusalem come F630 to your mind. 51 We R2651 are ashamed because we have heard reproach; Disgrace has covered our faces, For aliens R2652 have entered The holy places of the LORD'S house. 52 "Therefore behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "When I will punish her idols, R2653 And the mortally wounded will groan throughout her land. 53 "Though Babylon should ascend R2654 to the heavens, And though she should fortify her F631 lofty stronghold, From Me R2655 destroyers will come to her," declares the LORD. 54 The sound R2656 of an outcry from Babylon, And of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans! 55 For the LORD is going to destroy Babylon, And He will make her loud noise F632 vanish from her. And their waves R2657 will roar like many waters; The tumult of their voices sounds F633 forth. 56 For the destroyer R2658 is coming against her, against Babylon, And her mighty men will be captured, Their bows R2659 are shattered; For the LORD is a God of recompense, R2660 He will fully repay. 57 "I will make R2661 her princes and her wise men drunk, Her governors, her prefects and her mighty men, That they may sleep a perpetual R2662 sleep and not wake up," Declares R2663 the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts. 58 Thus says the LORD of hosts, "The broad wall R2664 of Babylon will be completely razed And her high gates R2665 will be set on fire; So the peoples will toil R2666 for nothing, And the nations become exhausted R2667 only for fire."

59 The message F634 which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, R2668 the grandson of Mahseiah, when he went with Zedekiah R2669 the king of Judah to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. (Now Seraiah was quartermaster.) 60 So Jeremiah wrote R2670 in a single scroll F635 all the calamity which would come upon Babylon, that is, all these words which have been written concerning Babylon. 61 Then Jeremiah said to Seraiah, "As soon as you come to Babylon, then see that you read all these words aloud, 62 and say, `You, O LORD, have promised F636 concerning this place to cut R2671 it off, so that there will be nothing R2672 dwelling in it, whether F637 man or beast, but it will be a perpetual desolation.' 63 "And as soon as you finish reading this scroll, F638 you will tie a stone to it and throw R2673 it into the middle of the Euphrates, 64 and say, `Just so shall Babylon sink down and not R2674 rise again because of the calamity that I am going to bring upon her; and they will become exhausted.' R2675 " Thus R2676 far are the words of Jeremiah.
