1 After these things there was a R237 feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the R238 sheep gate a pool, which is called in R239 Hebrew F61 Bethesda, F62 having five porticoes. 3 In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [waiting F63 for the moving of the waters; 4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.] 5 A man was there who had been ill F64 for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, "Do you wish to get well?" 7 The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the R240 water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me." 8 Jesus said to him, "Get R241 up, pick up your pallet and walk." 9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk. Now R242 it was the Sabbath on that day. 10 So the R243 Jews were saying to the man who was cured, "It is the Sabbath, and it R244 is not permissible for you to carry your pallet." 11 But he answered them, "He who made me well was the one who said to me, `Pick up your pallet and walk.'" 12 They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, `Pick up your pallet and walk'?" 13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "Behold, you have become well; do not sin R245 anymore, so R246 that nothing worse happens to you." 15 The man went away, and told the R247 Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 For this reason the R248 Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.

17 But He answered them, "My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working." 18 For this reason therefore the R249 Jews were R250 seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making R251 Himself equal with God. 19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the R252 Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the F65 Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 20 "For R253 the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater R254 works than these, so that you will marvel. 21 "For just as the Father raises the dead and gives R255 them life, even so the R256 Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22 "For not even the Father judges anyone, but He R257 has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He R258 who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. 24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes R259 Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does R260 not come into judgment, but has passed R261 out of death into life. 25 "Truly, truly, I say to you, an R262 hour is coming and now is, when the R263 dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear R264 will live. 26 "For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave R265 to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27 and He gave Him authority to execute R266 judgment, because He is the F66 Son of Man. 28 "Do not marvel at this; for an R267 hour is coming, in which all R268 who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come forth; those R269 who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. 30 "I R270 can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My R271 judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the R272 will of Him who sent Me.

31 "If R273 I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. F67 32 "There is another R274 who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true. 33 "You have sent to John, and he has R275 testified to the truth. 34 "But the R276 testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 "He was the R277 lamp that was burning and was shining and you were R278 willing to rejoice for a F68 while in his light. 36 "But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the R279 works which the Father has given Me to R280 accomplish--the very works that I do--testify about Me, that the Father has R281 sent Me. 37 "And the Father who sent Me, He R282 has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. 38 "You do not have His R283 word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent. R284 39 "You R285 F69 search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these R286 that testify about Me; 40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41 "I R287 do not receive glory from men; 42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 "I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; if R288 another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 "How can you believe, when you receive R289 glory F70 from one another and you do not seek the R290 glory F70 that is from the R291 one and only God? 45 "Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, R292 in whom you have set your hope. 46 "For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he R293 wrote about Me. 47 "But if R294 you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"

6:1-71 - Study Chapter  - Click for Chapter Audio

1 After these things Jesus R295 went away to the other side of the R296 Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias). R297 2 A large crowd followed Him, because they saw the signs R298 F71 which He was performing on those who were sick. 3 Then Jesus R299 went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples. 4 Now the R300 Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. 5 Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said to Philip, R301 "Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?" 6 This He was saying to test R302 him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do. 7 Philip R303 answered Him, "Two R304 hundred denarii F72 worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little." 8 One of His disciples, R305 Andrew, R306 Simon Peter's brother, said to Him, 9 "There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish, R307 but what are these for so many people?" 10 Jesus said, "Have the people sit F73 down." Now there was much R308 grass in the place. So the men sat F73 down, in number about five R309 thousand. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and having R310 given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish R311 as much as they wanted. 12 When they were filled, He said to His disciples, R312 "Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost." 13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets R313 with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Therefore when the people saw the sign F74 which He had performed, they said, "This is truly the Prophet R314 who is to come into the world."

15 So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending F75 to come and take Him by force to R315 make Him king, withdrew R316 again to the R317 mountain by Himself alone. 16 Now when evening came, His disciples R318 went down to the sea, 17 and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea to R319 Capernaum. It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea began to be stirred up because a strong wind was blowing. 19 Then, when they had rowed about three F76 or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were frightened. 20 But He said to them, "It is I; do R320 F77 not be afraid." 21 So they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

22 The next day the R321 crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there, except one, and that Jesus had R322 not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had gone away alone. 23 There came other small boats from Tiberias R323 near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord R324 had R325 given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and came R326 to Capernaum seeking Jesus. 25 When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, "Rabbi, R327 when did You get here?" 26 Jesus answered them and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek R328 Me, not because you saw signs, R329 but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 "Do not work R330 for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal R331 life, which the R332 Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has R333 set His seal."

28 Therefore they said to Him, "What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?" 29 Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the R334 work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has R335 sent." 30 So they said to Him, "What R336 then do You do for a sign, R337 so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform? 31 "Our R338 fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, `HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.' " 32 Jesus then said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33 "For the bread of God is that F78 which comes R340 down out of heaven, and gives life to the world." 34 Then they said to Him, "Lord, always give R341 us this bread." 35 Jesus said to them, "I R342 am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will R343 never thirst. 36 "But I R344 said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. 37 "All R345 that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. 38 "For I R346 have come down from heaven, not R347 to do My own will, but the R348 will of Him who sent R349 Me. 39 "This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all R350 that He has given Me I lose R351 nothing, but raise R352 it up on the last day. 40 "For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds R353 the Son and believes R354 in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise R355 him up on the last day." 41 Therefore R356 the Jews were grumbling about Him, because He said, "I am the bread that came R357 down out of heaven." 42 They were saying, "Is R358 not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we R359 know? How does He now say, `I R360 have come down out of heaven'?" 43 Jesus answered and said to them, "Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws R361 him; and I will raise R362 him up on the last day. 45 "It is written in R363 the prophets, `AND THEY SHALL ALL BE TAUGHT OF GOD.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. 46 "Not R366 that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has R367 eternal life. 48 "I R368 am the bread of life. 49 "Your R369 fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 "This is the bread which comes R370 down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not R371 die. 51 "I R372 am the living bread that came R373 down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he R374 will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for R375 the life of the world is My R376 flesh." 52 Then R377 the Jews began R378 to argue with one another, saying, "How can this man give us His flesh to eat?" 53 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the R379 Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise R380 him up on the last day. 55 "For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56 "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides R381 in Me, and I in him. 57 "As the living R382 Father sent R383 Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58 "This is the bread which came R384 down out of heaven; not as the R385 fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will R386 live forever." 59 These things He said in R387 the synagogue as He taught in R388 Capernaum.

60 Therefore many of His disciples, R389 when they heard this said, "This R390 is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?" 61 But Jesus, conscious R391 that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, "Does this cause R392 you to stumble? 62 "What then if you see the R393 Son of Man ascending R394 to where He was before? 63 "It R395 is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the R396 words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 64 "But there are some R397 of you who do not believe." For Jesus knew R398 from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who R399 it was that would betray F79 Him. 65 And He was saying, "For this reason I have said R400 to you, that no one can come to Me unless it R401 has been granted him from the Father." 66 As a result of this many of His disciples R402 withdrew R403 and were not walking with Him anymore. 67 So Jesus said to the R404 twelve, "You do not want to go away also, do you?" 68 Simon R405 Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words R406 of eternal life. 69 "We have believed and have come to know that You are the R407 Holy One of God." 70 Jesus answered them, "Did R408 I Myself not choose you, the R409 twelve, and yet one of you is a R410 devil?" 71 Now He meant Judas the R411 son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one R412 of the R413 twelve, was F80 going to betray Him.

1 After these things Jesus was R414 walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the R415 Jews were R416 seeking to kill Him. 2 Now the feast of the Jews, the R417 Feast of Booths, was near. 3 Therefore His brothers R418 said to Him, "Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples R419 also may see Your works which You are doing. 4 "For no one does anything in secret when F81 he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world." 5 For not even His brothers R420 were believing in Him. 6 So Jesus said to them, "My R421 time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune. 7 "The R422 world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its R423 deeds are evil. 8 "Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My R424 time has not yet fully come." 9 Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee. 10 But when His brothers R425 had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret. 11 So R426 the Jews were R427 seeking Him at the feast and were saying, "Where is He?" 12 There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some R428 were saying, "He is a good man"; others were saying, "No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray." 13 Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear R429 of the Jews.

14 But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach. R430 15 The R431 Jews then were astonished, saying, "How has this man become R432 learned, having never been educated?" 16 So Jesus answered them and said, "My R433 teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17 "If R434 anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself. 18 "He who speaks from himself seeks R435 his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him. 19 "Did R436 not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek R437 to kill Me?" 20 The crowd answered, "You R438 have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?" 21 Jesus answered them, "I did one R439 deed, F82 and you all marvel. 22 "For this reason Moses R440 has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the R441 fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man. 23 "If R442 a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath? 24 "Do not judge R443 according to appearance, but judge F83 with righteous judgment." 25 So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, "Is this not the man whom they are seeking to kill? 26 "Look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. The R444 rulers do not really know that this is the F84 Christ, do they? 27 "However, we R445 know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ may come, no one knows where He is from." 28 Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching R446 and saying, "You R447 both know Me and know where I am from; and I R448 have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29 "I R449 know Him, because I R450 am from Him, and He R451 sent Me." 30 So they were R452 seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour R453 had not yet come. 31 But many R454 of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, "When R455 the F85 Christ comes, He will not perform more signs R456 F86 than those which this man has, will He?" 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers R457 to seize R458 Him. 33 Therefore Jesus said, "For R459 a little while longer I am with you, then I R460 go to Him who sent Me. 34 "You R461 will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come." 35 The R462 Jews then said to one another, "Where R463 does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He is not intending to go to the R464 Dispersion among the R465 Greeks, and teach the Greeks, is He? 36 "What is this statement that He said, `You R466 will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come'?"

37 Now on the R467 last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If R468 F87 anyone is thirsty, let F88 him come to Me and drink. 38 "He who believes in Me, as R469 the Scripture said, `From his F89 innermost being will flow rivers of living R470 water.' " 39 But this He spoke of R471 the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the R472 Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. R473 40 Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, "This certainly is the R474 Prophet." 41 Others were saying, "This is the F90 Christ." Still others were saying, "Surely R475 the F90 Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He? 42 "Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the R476 descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" 43 So a R477 division occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 Some R478 of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 The officers R479 then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why did you not bring Him?" 46 The officers R480 answered, "Never R481 has a man spoken the way this man speaks." 47 The Pharisees then answered them, "You R482 have not also been led astray, have you? 48 "No R483 one of the R484 rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49 "But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed." 50 Nicodemus R485 (he who came to Him before, being one of them) said to them, 51 "Our R486 Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?" 52 They answered him, "You R487 are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee." 53 [Everyone F91 went to his home.
