1 How lonely R1 sits the city That was full R2 of people! She has become like a widow R3 Who was once great R4 among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces F1 Has become a forced R5 laborer! 2 She weeps R6 bitterly in the night And her tears are on her cheeks; She has none to comfort her Among all her lovers. R7 All her friends have dealt R8 treacherously with her; They have become her enemies. 3 Judah R9 has gone into exile under F2 affliction And under F2 harsh F3 servitude; She dwells among R10 the nations, But she has found no rest; All her R11 pursuers have overtaken her In the midst of distress. F4 4 The roads of F5 Zion are in mourning Because no R12 one comes to the appointed feasts. All her gates are desolate; R13 Her priests are groaning, Her virgins R14 are afflicted, And she herself is F6 bitter. R15 5 Her adversaries have become her F7 masters, Her enemies prosper; F8 For the LORD has caused R16 her grief Because of the multitude of her transgressions; Her little ones have gone away As captives before the adversary. 6 All her majesty R17 Has departed from the daughter of Zion; Her princes have become like deer That have found no pasture; And they have fled R18 F9 without strength Before the pursuer. 7 In the days of her affliction and homelessness Jerusalem R19 remembers all her precious things That were from the days of old, When her people fell into the hand of the adversary And no R20 one helped her. The adversaries saw her, They mocked R21 at her ruin. F10 8 Jerusalem sinned greatly, R22 Therefore she R23 has become an unclean thing. All who honored her despise her Because they have seen her nakedness; Even she R24 herself groans and turns away. 9 Her uncleanness R25 was in her skirts; She did F11 not consider her future. R26 Therefore she has fallen R27 F12 astonishingly; She R28 has no comforter. "See, R29 O LORD, my affliction, For the enemy has magnified R30 himself!" 10 The adversary has stretched out his hand Over all her precious things, For she has seen the nations R31 enter her sanctuary, The ones whom You commanded That they should not R32 enter into Your congregation. 11 All her people groan seeking R33 bread; They have given their precious things for food To restore R34 their lives F13 themselves. "See, O LORD, and look, For I am despised." R35

12 "Is it R36 nothing to all you who pass this way? Look and see if there is any pain F14 like my pain F14 Which was severely dealt out to me, Which the LORD inflicted on the day of His fierce R38 anger. 13 "From on high He sent fire into my bones, R39 And it prevailed F15 over them. He has spread a net R40 for my feet; He has turned me back; He has made me desolate, R41 Faint F16 all day long. 14 "The yoke R42 of my transgressions is bound; By His hand they are knit together. They have come R43 upon my neck; He has made my strength fail. F17 The Lord has R44 given me into the hands Of those against whom I am not able to stand. 15 "The Lord R45 has rejected all my strong men In my midst; He has called an appointed time F18 against me To crush my young R46 men; The Lord has trodden R47 as in a wine press The virgin daughter of Judah. 16 "For these things I weep; R48 My F19 eyes run down with water; Because far from me is a comforter, R49 One who restores my soul. My children are desolate Because the enemy has prevailed." 17 Zion stretches R50 out her hands; There is no one to comfort her; The LORD has commanded R51 concerning Jacob That the ones round about him should be his adversaries; Jerusalem R52 has become an unclean thing among them. 18 "The LORD is righteous; R53 For I have rebelled R54 against His command; F20 Hear now, all peoples, And behold R55 my pain; F21 My R56 virgins and my young men Have gone into captivity. 19 "I called R57 to my lovers, but they deceived me; My priests R58 and my elders perished in the city While they sought food to restore R59 their F22 strength themselves. 20 "See, O LORD, for I am in distress; My spirit R60 F23 is greatly troubled; My heart is overturned within me, For I have been very rebellious. R61 In the street the sword slays; F24 In the house it is like death. 21 "They have heard that I groan; R62 There is no one to comfort me; All my enemies have heard of my calamity; F25 They are glad R63 that You have done it. Oh, that You would bring the day which You have proclaimed, That they may become like R64 me. 22 "Let all their wickedness come before You; And deal R65 with them as You have dealt with me For all my transgressions; For my groans are many and my heart is faint."

1 How the Lord has covered R66 the daughter of Zion With a cloud in His anger! He has cast R67 from heaven to earth The glory R68 of Israel, And has not remembered His footstool R69 In the day of His anger. 2 The Lord has swallowed R70 up; He has not spared All the habitations of Jacob. In His wrath He has thrown R71 down The strongholds of the daughter of Judah; He has brought R72 them down to the ground; He has profaned R73 the kingdom and its princes. 3 In fierce anger He has cut off All F26 the strength R74 of Israel; He has drawn R75 back His right hand From before the enemy. And He has burned R76 in Jacob like a flaming fire Consuming round about. 4 He has bent His bow R77 like an enemy; He has set His right hand like an adversary And slain all that were pleasant R78 to the eye; In the tent of the daughter of Zion He has poured R79 out His wrath like fire. 5 The Lord has become like an enemy. R80 He has swallowed R81 up Israel; He has swallowed up all its palaces, R82 He has destroyed its strongholds And multiplied R83 in the daughter of Judah Mourning and moaning. 6 And He has violently treated His tabernacle F27 like a garden booth; He has destroyed R84 His appointed meeting F28 place. The LORD has caused R85 to be forgotten The appointed feast and sabbath in Zion, And He has despised R86 king and priest In the indignation of His anger. 7 The Lord has rejected R87 His altar, He has abandoned His sanctuary; He has R88 delivered into the hand of the enemy The walls of her palaces. They have made a noise R89 in the house of the LORD As in the day of an appointed feast. 8 The LORD determined F29 to destroy The wall of the daughter of Zion. He has stretched R90 out a line, He has not restrained His hand from destroying, F30 And He has caused R91 rampart and wall to lament; They have languished together. 9 Her gates R92 have sunk into the ground, He has destroyed and broken her bars. Her king and her princes are among the nations; The law R93 is no more. Also, her prophets find No R94 vision from the LORD.

10 The elders of the daughter of Zion Sit R95 on the ground, they are R96 silent. They have thrown dust R97 on their heads; They have girded themselves with sackcloth. R98 The virgins R99 of Jerusalem Have bowed their heads to the ground. 11 My eyes R100 fail because of tears, My spirit R101 F31 is greatly troubled; My heart R102 F32 is poured out on the earth Because R103 of the destruction F33 of the daughter of my people, When little R104 ones and infants faint In the streets of the city. 12 They say to their mothers, "Where R105 is grain and wine?" As they faint like a wounded man In the streets of the city, As their life R106 is poured out On their mothers' bosom. 13 How shall I admonish you? To what shall R107 I compare you, O daughter of Jerusalem? To what shall I liken you as I comfort you, O virgin R108 daughter of Zion? For your ruin F34 is as vast as the sea; Who can heal R109 you? 14 Your prophets R110 have seen for you False and foolish visions; And they have not exposed R111 your iniquity So as to restore you from captivity, But they have seen R112 for you false and misleading oracles. F35 15 All who pass along the way Clap R113 their hands in derision at you; They hiss R114 and shake their heads At the daughter of Jerusalem, "Is this the city of which they said, `The R115 perfection of beauty, A R116 joy to all the earth'?" 16 All your R117 enemies Have opened their mouths wide against you; They hiss and gnash R118 their teeth. They say, "We have swallowed R119 her up! Surely this is the day R120 for which we waited; We have reached it, we have seen it." 17 The LORD has done R121 what He purposed; He has accomplished His word Which He commanded from days of old. He has thrown down without R122 sparing, And He has caused the enemy to rejoice R123 over you; He has exalted R124 the might F36 of your adversaries. 18 Their heart R125 cried out to the Lord, "O wall R126 of the daughter of Zion, Let your tears R127 run down like a river day and night; Give yourself no relief, Let your F37 eyes have no rest. 19 "Arise, cry aloud in the night R128 At the beginning of the night watches; Pour R129 out your heart like water Before the presence of the Lord; Lift up your hands to Him For the life R130 of your little ones Who are faint R131 because of hunger At the head of every street." 20 See, O LORD, and look! With whom R132 have You dealt thus? Should women eat R133 their offspring, F38 The little ones who were born F39 healthy? Should priest R134 and prophet be slain In the sanctuary of the Lord? 21 On the ground in the streets Lie young R135 and old; My virgins R136 and my young men Have fallen by the sword. You have slain them in the day of Your anger, You have slaughtered, not R137 sparing. 22 You called as in the day of an appointed feast My terrors R138 on every side; And there was no R139 one who escaped or survived In the day of the LORD'S anger. Those whom R140 I bore F40 and reared, My enemy annihilated them.

1 I am the man who has seen R141 affliction Because of the rod of His wrath. 2 He has driven me and made me walk In darkness R142 and not in light. 3 Surely against me He has turned R143 His hand Repeatedly all the day. 4 He has caused my flesh R144 and my skin to waste away, He has broken R145 my bones. 5 He has besieged R146 and encompassed me with bitterness R147 and hardship. 6 In dark R148 places He has made me dwell, Like those who have long been dead. 7 He has walled R149 me in so that I cannot go out; He has made my chain R150 F41 heavy. 8 Even when I cry out and call for help, He shuts R151 out my prayer. 9 He has blocked R152 my ways with hewn stone; He has made my paths crooked. 10 He is to me like a bear lying in wait, Like a lion in secret places. 11 He has turned aside my ways and torn R153 me to pieces; He has made me desolate. 12 He bent R154 His bow And set R155 me as a target for the arrow. 13 He made the arrows F42 of His quiver R156 To enter into my inward F43 parts. 14 I have become a laughingstock R157 to all my people, Their mocking song R158 all the day. 15 He has filled R159 me with bitterness, He has made me drunk with wormwood. 16 He has broken R160 my teeth with gravel; R161 He has made me cower in the dust. R162 17 My soul has been rejected from R163 peace; I have forgotten happiness. F44 18 So I say, "My strength has perished, And so has my hope R164 from the LORD." 19 Remember my affliction and my wandering, F45 the wormwood R165 and bitterness. 20 Surely my R166 soul remembers And is bowed R167 down within me.

21 This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. R168 22 The LORD'S lovingkindnesses R169 indeed F46 never cease, For R170 His compassions never fail. 23 They are new every R171 morning; Great is Your R172 faithfulness. 24 "The LORD is my portion," R173 says my soul, "Therefore I have R174 hope in Him." 25 The LORD is good to those who wait R175 for Him, To the person F47 who seeks R176 Him. 26 It is good that he waits R177 silently For the salvation of the LORD. 27 It is good for a man that he should bear The yoke in his youth. 28 Let him sit R178 alone and be silent Since He has laid it on him. 29 Let him put F48 his mouth in the dust, R179 Perhaps there is hope. R180 30 Let him give his cheek R181 to the F49 smiter, Let him be filled with reproach. 31 For the Lord will not R182 reject forever, 32 For if He causes grief, Then He will have compassion R183 According to His abundant lovingkindness. 33 For He does R184 not afflict willingly F50 Or grieve the sons of men. 34 To crush under His feet All the prisoners of the land, F51 35 To deprive F52 a man of justice R185 In the presence of the Most High, 36 To defraud R186 F53 a man in his lawsuit-- Of these things the Lord does not approve. F54

37 Who is there F55 who speaks and it comes R187 to pass, Unless the Lord has commanded it? 38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High That both R188 F56 good and ill go forth? 39 Why should any living mortal, F57 or any man, Offer complaint R189 in F58 view of his sins? 40 Let us examine R190 and probe our ways, And let us return to the LORD. 41 We lift R191 up our heart and F59 hands Toward God in heaven;

42 We have transgressed R192 and rebelled, You have not R193 pardoned. 43 You have covered Yourself with anger R194 And pursued R195 us; You have slain and have R196 not spared. 44 You have covered R197 Yourself with a cloud So that no R198 prayer can pass through. 45 You have made us mere offscouring R199 and refuse In the midst of the peoples. 46 All our enemies have opened R200 their mouths against us. 47 Panic R201 and pitfall have befallen us, Devastation and destruction; 48 My eyes R202 F60 run down with streams of water Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people. 49 My eyes pour down unceasingly, R203 Without stopping, 50 Until the LORD looks R204 down And sees from heaven. 51 My eyes bring pain to my soul Because of all the daughters of my city. 52 My enemies without R205 cause Hunted me down like R206 a bird; 53 They have silenced me F61 in R207 the pit And have placed R208 F62 a stone on me. 54 Waters flowed over R209 my head; I said, "I am cut off!"

55 I called R210 on Your name, O LORD, Out of the lowest pit. 56 You have heard R211 my voice, "Do R212 not hide Your ear from my prayer for relief, From my cry for help." 57 You drew R213 near when I called on You; You said, "Do R214 not fear!" 58 O Lord, You have R215 pleaded my soul's cause; You have redeemed R216 my life. 59 O LORD, You have seen R217 my oppression; Judge R218 my case. 60 You have seen all their vengeance, All their schemes R219 against me. 61 You have heard their reproach, R220 O LORD, All their schemes against me. 62 The lips R221 of my assailants and their whispering Are against me all day long. 63 Look on their sitting R222 and their rising; I R223 am their mocking song. 64 You will recompense R224 them, O LORD, According to the work of their hands. 65 You will give them hardness R225 F63 of heart, Your curse will be on them. 66 You will pursue R226 them in anger and destroy them From under the heavens R227 of the LORD!

1 How dark R228 the gold has become, How the pure gold has changed! The sacred stones are poured out At the corner F64 of every street. 2 The precious sons of Zion, Weighed against fine gold, How they are regarded as earthen R229 jars, The work of a potter's hands! 3 Even jackals R230 offer the breast, They nurse their young; But the daughter of my people has become cruel R231 Like ostriches R232 in the wilderness. 4 The tongue R233 of the infant cleaves To the roof of its mouth because of thirst; R234 The little ones ask R235 for bread, But no one breaks it for them. 5 Those who ate delicacies R236 Are desolate in the streets; Those reared F65 in purple Embrace ash pits. 6 For the iniquity F66 of the daughter of my people Is greater than the sin R237 F67 of Sodom, Which was overthrown R238 as in a moment, And no hands were turned F68 toward her. 7 Her consecrated F69 ones were purer R239 than snow, They were whiter than milk; They were more ruddy in body F70 than corals, Their polishing was like lapis R240 F71 lazuli. 8 Their appearance is blacker R241 than soot, They are not recognized in the streets; Their skin R242 is shriveled on their bones, It is withered, it has become like wood. 9 Better are those slain R243 F72 with the sword Than those slain F72 with hunger; For they pine R244 F73 away, being stricken For lack of the fruits of the F74 field. 10 The hands of compassionate women Boiled R245 their own children; They became food R246 for them Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people. 11 The LORD has accomplished R247 His wrath, He has poured out His fierce anger; And He has kindled R248 a fire in Zion Which has consumed its foundations. 12 The kings of the earth did not believe, Nor did any of the R249 inhabitants of the world, That the adversary and the enemy Could enter R250 the gates of Jerusalem.

13 Because of the sins of her prophets R251 And the iniquities of her priests, Who have shed in her midst The blood R252 of the righteous; 14 They wandered, blind, R253 in the streets; They were defiled with blood R254 So that no one could touch their garments. R255 15 "Depart! Unclean!" R256 they F75 cried of themselves. "Depart, depart, do not touch!" So they fled R257 and wandered; Men among the nations said, "They shall not continue to dwell with us." 16 The presence of the LORD has scattered them, He will not continue to regard them; They did not honor R258 F76 the priests, They did not favor the elders. 17 Yet our eyes failed, Looking for help F77 was useless; R259 In our watching we have watched For a nation R260 that could not save. 18 They hunted R261 our steps So that we could not walk in our streets; Our end R262 drew near, Our days were finished F78 For our end had come. 19 Our pursuers were swifter R263 Than the eagles of the sky; They chased us on the mountains, They waited in ambush for us in the wilderness. 20 The breath R264 of our nostrils, the LORD'S anointed, Was captured R266 in their pits, Of whom we had said, "Under his shadow R267 We shall live among the nations."

21 Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, R268 Who dwells in the land of Uz; But the cup R269 will come around to you as well, You will become drunk and make yourself naked. 22 The punishment of your iniquity has been completed, R270 O daughter of Zion; He will exile you no longer. But He will R271 punish your iniquity, O daughter of Edom; He will expose your sins!

1 Remember, O LORD, what has befallen us; Look, and see our reproach! R272 2 Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, R273 Our houses R274 to aliens. 3 We have become orphans without R275 a father, Our mothers are like widows. 4 We F79 have to pay for our drinking water, R276 Our wood comes to us at a price. 5 Our F80 pursuers are at our necks; We are worn out, there is no R277 rest for us. 6 We have submitted F81 to Egypt R278 and Assyria to F82 get enough bread. 7 Our fathers R279 sinned, and are no more; It is we who have borne their iniquities. 8 Slaves R280 rule over us; There is no R281 one to deliver us from their hand. 9 We get our bread at F83 the risk R282 of our lives Because F84 of the sword in the wilderness. 10 Our skin has become as hot R283 as an oven, Because of the F85 burning heat of famine. 11 They ravished the women R284 in Zion, The virgins in the cities of Judah. 12 Princes were hung by their hands; Elders R285 F86 were not respected. 13 Young men worked R286 F87 at the grinding mill, And youths stumbled R287 under loads of wood. 14 Elders are F88 gone from the gate, Young men from their music. R288 15 The joy of our hearts has ceased; R289 Our dancing has been turned into mourning. 16 The crown R290 has fallen from our head; Woe R291 to us, for we have sinned!

17 Because of this our heart R292 is faint, Because of these things our eyes R293 are dim; 18 Because of Mount R294 Zion which lies desolate, Foxes R295 prowl in it. 19 You, R296 O LORD, rule F89 forever; Your throne R297 is from generation to generation. 20 Why do You forget R298 us forever? Why do You forsake us so F90 long? 21 Restore R299 us to You, O LORD, that we may be restored; Renew our R300 days as of old, 22 Unless You R301 have utterly rejected us And are exceedingly angry R302 with us.
