1 That day Jesus went out of the R473 house and was sitting by R474 the sea. 2 And large F294 crowds gathered to Him, so He R475 got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd was standing on the beach. 3 And He spoke many things to them in parables, R476 saying, "Behold, the sower went out to sow; 4 and as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate them up. 5 "Others fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil. 6 "But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 7 "Others fell among F295 the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out. 8 "And others fell on the good soil and yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, R477 some sixty, and some thirty. 9 "He R478 who has ears, let F296 him hear." 10 And the disciples came and said to Him, "Why do You speak to them in parables?" 11 Jesus F297 answered them, "To R479 you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. 12 "For R480 whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him. 13 "Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing R481 they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 "In F298 their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says, `YOU WILL KEEP ON HEARING, BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND; YOU WILL KEEP ON SEEING, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE; 15 FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS BECOME DULL, WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR, AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR EYES, OTHERWISE THEY WOULD SEE WITH THEIR EYES, HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART AND RETURN, AND I WOULD HEAL THEM.' 16 "But R484 blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. 17 "For truly I say to you that many R485 prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. 18 "Hear R486 then the parable of the sower. 19 "When anyone hears the R487 word F302 of the kingdom and does not understand it, the R488 evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road. 20 "The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, F303 immediately he falls R489 F304 away. 22 "And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the R490 world F305 and the deceitfulness R491 of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 23 "And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a R492 hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty."

24 Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, "The R493 kingdom of heaven may F306 be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 "But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares F307 among the wheat, and went away. 26 "But when the wheat F308 sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also. 27 "The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, `Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How F309 then does it have tares?' 28 "And he said to them, `An enemy F310 has done this!' The slaves said to him, `Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?' 29 "But he said, `No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 `Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, "First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather R494 the wheat into my barn.""' 31 He presented another parable to them, saying, "The R495 kingdom of heaven is like a R496 mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; 32 and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that THE BIRDS OF THE AIR come and NEST IN ITS BRANCHES." 33 He spoke another parable to them, "The R498 kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three R499 pecks F312 of flour until it was all leavened." 34 All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak to them without R500 a parable. 35 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: "I R501 WILL OPEN MY MOUTH IN PARABLES; I WILL UTTER THINGS HIDDEN SINCE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD." 36 Then He left the crowds and went into the R502 house. And His disciples came to Him and said, "Explain R503 to us the parable of the tares F313 of the field." 37 And He said, "The one who sows the good seed is the R504 Son of Man, 38 and the field is the world; and as for the good seed, these are the R505 sons of the kingdom; and the tares are the R506 sons of the R507 evil one; 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the R508 end F314 of the age; and the reapers are angels. 40 "So just as the tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the R509 end F315 of the age. 41 "The R510 Son of Man will R511 send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all F316 stumbling R512 blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, 42 and will R513 throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there R514 will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 "Then R515 THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He R516 who has ears, let F317 him hear.

44 "The R517 kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells R518 all that he has and buys that field. 45 "Again, the R519 kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, 46 and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 "Again, the R520 kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every kind; 48 and when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away. 49 "So it will be at the R521 end F318 of the age; the angels will come forth and take F319 out the wicked from among the righteous, 50 and will R522 throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there R523 will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 51 "Have you understood all these things?" They said to Him, "Yes." 52 And Jesus F320 said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a head of a household, who brings out of his treasure things new and old."

53 When R524 Jesus had finished these parables, He departed from there. 54 He R525 came to His F321 hometown and began R526 teaching them in their synagogue, so that they R527 were astonished, and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous F322 powers? 55 "Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not His R528 mother called Mary, and His brothers, R528 James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 "And His R529 sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?" 57 And they took offense R530 at Him. But Jesus said to them, "A R531 prophet is not without honor except in his hometown F323 and in his own household." 58 And He did not do many miracles F324 there because of their unbelief.

1 At R532 that time F325 Herod R533 the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus, 2 and said to his servants, "This R534 is John the Baptist; he F326 has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him." 3 For when Herod R535 had John arrested, he bound him and put him in R536 prison because of Herodias, R537 the wife of his brother Philip. 4 For John had been saying to him, "It R538 is not lawful for you to have her." 5 Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded John F327 as a R539 prophet. 6 But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias R540 danced before F328 them and pleased Herod, R541 7 so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Having been prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist." 9 Although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths, and because of his F329 dinner guests. 10 He sent and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. 12 His disciples came and took away the body and buried it; F330 and they went and reported to Jesus.

13 Now R542 when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people F331 heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14 When He went ashore, F332 He saw R543 a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed R544 their sick. 15 When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and the hour is already late; F333 so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves." 16 But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!" 17 They said to Him, "We have here only five R545 loaves and two fish." 18 And He said, "Bring them here to Me." 19 Ordering the people F334 to sit F335 down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed R546 the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds, 20 and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets. R547 21 There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.

22 Immediately R548 He made F336 the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. 23 After He had sent the crowds away, He R549 went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. 24 But the boat was already a F337 long distance from the land, battered F338 by the waves; for the wind was contrary. R550 F339 25 And in the R551 fourth F340 watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. 26 When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is a R552 ghost!" And they cried out in F341 fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take R553 courage, it is I; do R554 not be afraid." 28 Peter said to Him, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." 29 And He said, "Come!" And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, "You R555 of little faith, why did you doubt?" 32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "You are certainly God's R556 Son!"

34 When R557 they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. R558 35 And when the men of that place recognized F342 Him, they sent word into all that surrounding district and brought to Him all who were sick; 36 and they implored Him that they might just touch the R559 fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched R560 it were cured.

1 Then R561 some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from R562 Jerusalem and said, 2 "Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do R563 not wash their hands when they eat bread." 3 And He answered and said to them, "Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 "For God said, `HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,' and, `HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.' 5 "But you say, `Whoever says to his father or mother, "Whatever I have that would help you has been given F344 to God," 6 he is not to honor his father or his mother.' F345 And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 "You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: 8 `THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 9 `BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.' "

10 After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, "Hear and understand. 11 "It R568 is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man." 12 Then the disciples came and said to Him, "Do You know that the Pharisees were offended F346 when they heard this statement?" 13 But He answered and said, "Every R569 plant which My heavenly Father did not plant shall be uprooted. 14 "Let them alone; they R570 are blind guides of F347 the blind. And if R571 a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit." 15 Peter said F348 to Him, "Explain R572 the parable to us." 16 Jesus F349 said, "Are you still lacking in understanding also? 17 "Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated? F350 18 "But the R573 things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. 19 "For R574 out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, F351 thefts, false witness, slanders. 20 "These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man."

21 Jesus R575 went away from there, and withdrew into the district of Tyre R576 and Sidon. R576 22 And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son R577 of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed." R578 23 But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, "Send her away, because she keeps shouting at F352 us." 24 But He answered and said, "I was sent only to the R579 lost sheep of the house of Israel." 25 But she came and began R580 to F353 bow down before Him, saying, "Lord, help me!" 26 And He answered and said, "It is not good F354 to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." 27 But she said, "Yes, Lord; but F355 even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters' table." 28 Then Jesus said to her, "O woman, your R581 faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed at F356 once.

29 Departing R582 from there, Jesus went along by the R583 Sea of Galilee, and having gone up on the mountain, He was sitting there. 30 And large F357 crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and He R584 healed them. 31 So the crowd marveled as they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, F358 and the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified R585 the God of Israel. 32 And R586 Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, "I R587 feel compassion for the people, F359 because they have F360 remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way." 33 The disciples said to Him, "Where would we get so many loaves in this desolate place to satisfy such a large crowd?" 34 And Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven, and a few small fish." 35 And He directed the people F361 to sit F362 down on the ground; 36 and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and giving R588 thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 37 And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, seven large baskets R589 full. 38 And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 And sending away the crowds, Jesus got into the R590 boat and came to the region of Magadan. 1 The R592 Pharisees R593 and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they asked R594 Him to show them a sign F363 from heaven. 2 But He replied to them, "When R595 F364 it is evening, you say, `It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.' 3 "And in the morning, `There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Do R596 you know how to discern the appearance F365 of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times? 4 "An R597 evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; F366 and a sign F366 will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah." And He left them and went away.

5 And the disciples came to the other side of the sea, but they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 And Jesus said to them, "Watch out and beware R598 of the leaven F367 of the Pharisees R599 and Sadducees." 7 They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, "He said that because we did not bring any bread." 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, "You R600 men of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves that you have no bread? 9 "Do you not yet understand or remember the R601 five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets full you picked up? 10 "Or the R602 seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many large baskets full you picked up? 11 "How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware R603 of the leaven F368 of the Pharisees R604 and Sadducees." 12 Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees R605 and Sadducees.

13 Now R606 when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea R607 Philippi, He was asking His disciples, "Who do people say that the R608 Son of Man is?" 14 And they said, "Some say John R609 the Baptist; and others, Elijah; R610 F369 but still others, Jeremiah, F370 or one of the prophets." 15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" 16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the R611 F371 Christ, the R612 Son of the R613 living God." 17 And Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon R614 Barjona, F372 because flesh R615 and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 "I also say to you that you are Peter, R616 F373 and upon this rock F374 I will build My church; and the gates of Hades R617 will not overpower it. 19 "I will give you the R618 keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever R619 you bind on earth shall F375 have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall F376 have been loosed in heaven." 20 Then R620 He warned F377 the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the R621 F378 Christ.

21 From R622 that time Jesus F379 began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer R623 many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. 22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God F380 forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen F381 to You." 23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! R624 You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's F382 interests, but man's."

24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take R625 up his cross and follow Me. 25 "For whoever R626 wishes to save his life F383 will lose it; but whoever loses his life F383 for My sake will find it. 26 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 "For the Son R627 of Man is R628 going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS. 28 "Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son R630 of Man coming R631 in His kingdom."

17:1-27 - Study Chapter  - Click for Chapter Audio

1 Six R632 days later Jesus took with Him Peter R633 and James F386 and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. 2 And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, I R634 will make three tabernacles F387 here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a R635 voice out of the cloud said, "This R636 is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!" 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell face F388 down to the ground and were terrified. 7 And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, "Get up, and do R637 not be afraid." 8 And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus Himself alone. 9 As R638 they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, "Tell R639 the vision to no one until the R640 Son of Man has risen R641 from the dead." 10 And His disciples asked Him, "Why then do the scribes say that Elijah R642 must come first?" 11 And He answered and said, "Elijah is coming and will restore all things; 12 but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did to F389 him whatever they wished. So also the R643 Son of Man is going to suffer at F390 their hands." 13 Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist.

14 When R644 they came to the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, falling on his knees before Him and saying, 15 "Lord, F391 have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic R645 F392 and is very ill; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 "I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him." 17 And Jesus answered and said, "You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me." 18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured at F393 once. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not drive it out?" 20 And He said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if R646 you have faith the F394 size of a R647 mustard seed, you will say to this R648 mountain, `Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing R649 will be impossible to you. 21 ["But R650 F395 this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."]

22 And R651 while they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be delivered F396 into the hands of men; 23 and they R652 will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day." And they were deeply grieved.

24 When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the R653 two-drachma F397 tax came to Peter and said, "Does your teacher not pay the R653 two-drachma F397 tax?" 25 He said, "Yes." And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect customs R654 or poll-tax, R655 from their sons or from strangers?" 26 When Peter said, "From strangers," Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are exempt. F398 27 "However, so that we do not offend R656 F399 them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a F400 shekel. Take that and give it to them for you and Me."

18:1-35 - Study Chapter  - Click for Chapter Audio

1 At R657 that time F401 the disciples came to Jesus and said, "Who R658 then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" 2 And He called a child to Himself and set him before F402 them, 3 and said, "Truly I say to you, unless you are F403 converted and become R659 like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 "Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 "And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me; 6 but whoever R660 causes R661 one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would F404 be better for him to have a heavy F405 millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

7 "Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it R662 is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes! 8 "If R663 your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to F406 have two hands or two feet and be cast into the eternal fire. 9 "If R664 your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to F407 have two eyes and be cast into the fiery R665 F408 hell. 10 "See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their R666 angels in heaven continually see the face of My Father who is in heaven. 11 ["For R667 F409 the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.] 12 "What do you think? If R668 any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and search for the one that is straying? 13 "If it turns out that he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray. 14 "So it is not the will of F410 your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones perish.

15 "If R669 your brother sins, F411 go and show F412 him his fault in F413 private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. 16 "But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED. 17 "If he refuses to listen to them, tell R671 it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let R672 him be to you as a F415 Gentile and a F415 tax collector. 18 "Truly I say to you, whatever R673 you bind F416 on earth shall F417 have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose F418 on earth shall F417 have been loosed in heaven. 19 "Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it R674 shall be done for them by F419 My Father who is in heaven. 20 "For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I R675 am there in their midst."

21 Then Peter came and said to Him, "Lord, how R676 often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven R677 times?" 22 Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy R678 times seven. 23 "For this reason the R679 kingdom of heaven may F420 be compared to a king who wished to settle R680 accounts with his slaves. 24 "When he had begun to settle them, one who owed him ten F421 thousand talents was brought to him. 25 "But since he did R681 F422 not have the means to repay, his lord commanded him to R682 be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment to be made. 26 "So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated R683 himself before him, saying, `Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.' 27 "And the lord of that slave felt compassion and released him and forgave R684 him the debt. F423 28 "But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; F424 and he seized him and began to choke him, saying, `Pay back what you owe.' 29 "So his fellow slave fell to the ground and began to plead with him, saying, `Have patience with me and I will repay you.' 30 "But he was unwilling and F425 went and threw him in prison until he should pay back what was owed. 31 "So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their lord all that had happened. 32 "Then summoning him, his lord said to him, `You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 `Should R685 you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?' 34 "And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him. 35 "My R686 heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your F426 heart."

1 When R687 Jesus had finished these words, He departed from Galilee and came R688 into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan; 2 and large F427 crowds followed Him, and He R689 healed them there.

3 Some Pharisees came to Jesus, F428 testing Him and asking, "Is R690 it lawful for a man to divorce F429 his wife for any reason at all?" 4 And He answered and said, "Have you not read that R691 He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, 5 and said, `FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH'? 6 "So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate." 7 They said to Him, "Why R694 then did Moses command to GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY?" 8 He said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce F430 your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way. 9 "And I say to you, whoever R695 divorces F431 his wife, except for immorality, F432 and marries another woman commits F433 adultery." F434 10 The disciples said to Him, "If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry." 11 But He said to them, "Not R696 all men can accept this statement, but only R697 those to whom it has been given. 12 "For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother's womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it."

13 Then R698 some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But Jesus said, "Let R699 F435 the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the R700 kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." 15 After laying His hands on them, He departed from there.

16 And R701 someone came to Him and said, "Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal R702 life?" 17 And He said to him, "Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if R703 you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments." 18 Then he said to Him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER; YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY; YOU SHALL NOT STEAL; YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS; 19 HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." 20 The young man said to Him, "All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?" 21 Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, F436 go and sell R707 your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure R708 in heaven; and come, follow Me." 22 But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

23 And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it R709 is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 "Again I say to you, it R710 is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 25 When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, "Then who can be saved?" 26 And looking at them Jesus said to them, "With R711 people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." 27 Then Peter said to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?"
