Contrast the Upright and the Wicked

1 A gentle R554 answer turns away wrath,

But a harsh R555 F190 word stirs up anger.

2 The tongue R556 of the wise makes knowledge acceptable, F191

But the mouth R557 of fools spouts folly.

3 The eyes R558 of the LORD are in every place,

Watching the evil and the good.

4 A soothing F192 tongue is a tree of life,

But perversion in it crushes F193 the spirit.

5 A fool rejects F194 his father's discipline,

But he who regards reproof is sensible.

6 Great wealth is in the house of the righteous, R559

But trouble is in the income of the wicked.

7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge,

But the hearts of fools are not so.

8 The sacrifice R560 of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD,

But the R561 prayer of the upright is His delight.

9 The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD,

But He loves one who pursues R562 righteousness.

10 Grievous punishment is for him who forsakes the way;

He who hates reproof will die.

11 Sheol R563 F195 and Abaddon F196 lie open before the LORD,

How much more the hearts R564 of men! F197

12 A scoffer R565 does not love one who reproves him,

He will not go to the wise.

13 A joyful R566 heart makes a cheerful F198 face,

But when F199 the heart is sad, R567 the spirit R568 is broken.

14 The mind R569 of the intelligent seeks knowledge,

But the mouth of fools feeds on folly.

15 All the days of the afflicted are bad,

But a cheerful F200 heart has a continual feast.

16 Better R570 is a little with the fear F201 of the LORD

Than great treasure and turmoil with it.

17 Better R571 is a dish F202 of vegetables F203 where love is

Than a fattened R572 ox served with hatred.

18 A hot-tempered R573 man stirs up strife,

But the slow R574 to anger calms R575 a dispute.

19 The way of the lazy is as a hedge of thorns,

But the path of the upright is a highway.

20 A wise R576 son makes a father glad,

But a foolish man despises R577 his mother.

21 Folly is joy to him who lacks sense, F204

But a man of understanding walks R578 straight.

22 Without consultation, plans are frustrated,

But with many counselors they succeed. F205

23 A man R579 has joy in an apt F206 answer,

And how delightful is a timely word! R580

24 The path R581 of life leads upward for the wise

That he may keep away from Sheol F207 below.

25 The LORD will tear R582 down the house of the proud,

But He will establish R583 the boundary of the widow. R584

26 Evil plans are an abomination to the LORD,

But pleasant words are pure.

27 He who profits R585 illicitly troubles his own house,

But he who hates R586 bribes will live.

28 The heart of the righteous ponders R587 how to answer,

But the mouth R588 of the wicked pours out evil things.

29 The LORD is far R589 from the wicked,

But He hears R590 the prayer of the righteous.

30 Bright F208 eyes gladden the heart;

Good news puts fat on the bones.

31 He whose ear listens to the life-giving reproof

Will dwell among the wise.

32 He who neglects R591 discipline despises R592 himself,

But he who listens R593 to reproof acquires understanding. F209

33 The fear F210 of the LORD is the instruction for wisdom,

And before honor comes humility.
