1 Samuel 14:36-46 [ Verse 42 in Original: Hebrew / Greek ]
[ Read Chapter | Discuss these Verses ]
36 And Saul said (8799), Let us go down (8799) after the Philistines by night, and spoil (8799) them until the morning light, and let us not leave (8686) a man of them. And they said (8799), Do (8798) whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said (8799) the priest, Let us draw near (8799) hither unto God. 37 And Saul asked (8799) counsel of God, Shall I go down (8799) after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver (8799) them into the hand of Israel? But he answered (8804) him not that day. 38 And Saul said (8799), Draw ye near (8798) hither, all the chief of the people: and know (8798) and see (8798) wherein this sin hath been this day. 39 For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth (8688) Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely (8800) die (8799). But there was not a man among all the people that answered (8802) him. 40 Then said (8799) he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said (8799) unto Saul, Do (8798) what seemeth good unto thee. 41 Therefore Saul said (8799) unto the LORD God of Israel, Give (8798) a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken (8735): but the people escaped (8804). 42 And Saul said (8799), Cast (8685) lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken (8735). 43 Then Saul said (8799) to Jonathan, Tell (8685) me what thou hast done (8804). And Jonathan told (8686) him, and said (8799), I did but (8800) taste (8804) a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die (8799). 44 And Saul answered (8799), God do so (8799) and more also (8686): for thou shalt surely (8800) die (8799), Jonathan. 45 And the people said (8799) unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die (8799), who hath wrought (8804) this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall (8799) to the ground; for he hath wrought (8804) with God this day. So the people rescued (8799) Jonathan, that he died (8804) not. 46 Then Saul went up (8799) from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went (8804) to their own place.
