1 Samuel 17:12-30 [ Verse 13 in Original: Hebrew / Greek ]
[ Read Chapter | Discuss these Verses ]
12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah *, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went (8804) among men for an old man (8804) in the days of Saul. 13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse went (8799) and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went (8804) to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. 14 And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed * (8804) Saul. 15 But David went (8802) and returned (8802) from Saul to feed (8800) his father's sheep at Bethlehem. 16 And the Philistine drew near (8799) morning (8687) and evening (8687), and presented (8691) himself forty days. 17 And Jesse said (8799) unto David his son, Take (8798) now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run (8685) to the camp to thy brethren; 18 And carry (8686) these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look (8799) how thy brethren fare, and take (8799) their pledge. 19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting (8737) with the Philistines. 20 And David rose up early (8686) in the morning, and left (8799) the sheep with a keeper (8802), and took (8799), and went (8799), as Jesse had commanded (8765) him; and he came (8799) to the trench, as the host was going forth (8802) to the fight, and shouted (8689) for the battle. 21 For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array (8799), army against (8800) army. 22 And David left (8799) his carriage in the hand of the keeper (8802) of the carriage, and ran (8799) into the army, and came (8799) and saluted * (8799) his brethren. 23 And as he talked (8764) with them, behold, there came up (8802) the champion *, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies * (8675) of the Philistines, and spake (8762) according to the same words: and David heard (8799) them. 24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw (8800) the man, fled (8799) from him, and were sore afraid (8799). 25 And the men of Israel said (8799), Have ye seen (8804) this man that is come up (8802)? surely to defy (8763) Israel is he come up (8802): and it shall be, that the man who killeth (8686) him, the king will enrich (8686) him with great riches, and will give (8799) him his daughter, and make (8799) his father's house free in Israel. 26 And David spake (8799) to the men that stood (8802) by him, saying (8800), What shall be done (8735) to the man that killeth (8686) this Philistine, and taketh away (8689) the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy (8765) the armies of the living God? 27 And the people answered (8799) him after this manner, saying (8800), So shall it be done (8735) to the man that killeth (8686) him. 28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard (8799) when he spake (8763) unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled (8799) against David, and he said (8799), Why camest thou down (8804) hither? and with whom hast thou left (8804) those few sheep in the wilderness? I know (8804) thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down (8804) that thou mightest see (8800) the battle. 29 And David said (8799), What have I now done (8804)? Is there not a cause? 30 And he turned (8735) from him toward another, and spake (8799) after the same manner: and the people answered him again (8686) after the former manner.
