1 Samuel 8:4-22 [ Verse 11 in Original: Hebrew / Greek ]
[ Read Chapter | Discuss these Verses ]
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together (8691), and came (8799) to Samuel unto Ramah, 5 And said (8799) unto him, Behold, thou art old (8804), and thy sons walk (8804) not in thy ways: now make (8798) us a king to judge (8800) us like all the nations. 6 But the thing displeased * (8799) Samuel, when they said (8804), Give (8798) us a king to judge (8800) us. And Samuel prayed (8691) unto the LORD. 7 And the LORD said (8799) unto Samuel, Hearken (8798) unto the voice of the people in all that they say (8799) unto thee: for they have not rejected (8804) thee, but they have rejected (8804) me, that I should not reign (8800) over them. 8 According to all the works which they have done (8804) since the day that I brought them up (8687) out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken (8799) me, and served (8799) other gods, so do (8802) they also unto thee. 9 Now therefore hearken (8798) unto their voice: howbeit yet protest (8686) solemnly (8687) unto them, and shew (8689) them the manner of the king that shall reign (8799) over them. 10 And Samuel told (8799) all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked (8802) of him a king. 11 And he said (8799), This will be the manner of the king that shall reign (8799) over you: He will take (8799) your sons, and appoint (8804) them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run (8804) before his chariots. 12 And he will appoint (8800) him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear (8800) his ground, and to reap (8800) his harvest, and to make (8800) his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots. 13 And he will take (8799) your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers (8802). 14 And he will take (8799) your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give (8804) them to his servants. 15 And he will take the tenth (8799) of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give (8804) to his officers, and to his servants. 16 And he will take (8799) your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put (8804) them to his work. 17 He will take the tenth (8799) of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants. 18 And ye shall cry out (8804) in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen (8804) you; and the LORD will not hear (8799) you in that day. 19 Nevertheless the people refused (8762) to obey (8800) the voice of Samuel; and they said (8799), Nay; but we will have a king over us; 20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge (8804) us, and go out (8804) before us, and fight (8738) our battles. 21 And Samuel heard (8799) all the words of the people, and he rehearsed (8762) them in the ears of the LORD. 22 And the LORD said (8799) to Samuel, Hearken (8798) unto their voice, and make (8689) them a king. And Samuel said (8799) unto the men of Israel, Go (8798) ye every man unto his city.
