Paul's Ministry

1 For you yourselves know, brethren, that our coming R37 F9 to you was R38 not in vain, 2 but after we had already suffered and been mistreated R39 in Philippi, R40 as you know, we had the boldness in our God to R41 speak to you the gospel R42 of God amid much opposition. R43 F10 3 For our exhortation R44 does not come from error R45 or impurity R46 or by F11 way of deceit; R47 4 but R48 just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted R49 with the gospel, so we speak, not R50 as pleasing men, but God who examines R51 F12 our hearts. 5 For we never came with F13 flattering speech, as you know, nor with a R52 pretext for greed--God R53 is witness-- 6 nor did we seek R54 glory from men, either from you or from others, even though as apostles R55 of Christ we F14 might have asserted F15 our authority. 7 But we proved F16 to be gentle R56 F17 among F18 you, as R57 a nursing mother tenderly F19 cares for her own children. 8 Having so fond an affection for you, we were well-pleased to impart R58 to you not only the gospel R59 of God but also our own lives, F20 because you had become very F21 dear to us.

9 For you recall, brethren, our labor R60 and hardship, how working R61 night and day so as not to be a burden R62 to any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel R63 of God. 10 You are witnesses, and so is God, R64 how R65 devoutly and uprightly and blamelessly we behaved F22 toward you believers; F23 11 just as you know how we were exhorting R66 and encouraging and imploring R67 F24 each one of you as a R68 father would his own children, 12 so that you would walk R69 in a manner worthy of the God who calls R70 you into His own kingdom and glory. R71

13 For this reason we also constantly thank R72 God that when you received the word R73 of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not R74 as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which R75 also performs its work in you who believe. 14 For you, brethren, became imitators R76 of the R77 churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in R78 Judea, for you R79 also endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own countrymen, even R80 as they did from the Jews, 15 who R81 both killed the Lord Jesus and the R82 prophets, and drove F25 us out. They F26 are not pleasing to God, but F26 hostile to all men, 16 hindering R83 us from speaking to the Gentiles so R84 that they may be saved; with the result that they always fill R85 up the measure of their sins. But wrath R86 has come upon them to F27 the utmost.

17 But we, brethren, having been taken away from you for a short F28 while--in R87 person, F29 not in spirit--were F30 all the more eager with great desire to R88 see your face. 18 For F31 we R89 wanted to come to you--I, Paul, more R90 F32 than once--and yet Satan R91 hindered R92 us. 19 For who is our hope or joy R93 or crown of exultation? Is it not even you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming? R94 F33 20 For you are our R95 glory and joy.
