Purpose of This Letter

1 This is now, beloved, R122 the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring R123 up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember R124 the words spoken beforehand by the R125 holy prophets and the R126 commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.

The Coming Day of the Lord

3 Know R127 this first of all, that in R128 the last days mockers R129 will come with their mocking, following R130 after their own lusts, 4 and saying, "Where R131 is the promise of His coming? R132 For ever since the fathers fell R133 asleep, all continues just as it was from R134 the beginning of creation." 5 For when F20 they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by R135 the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed R136 out of water and by water, 6 through which the R137 world at that time was destroyed, R138 being flooded with water. 7 But by His word the R139 present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, R140 kept for the R141 day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, R142 that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a R143 thousand years like one day. 9 The R144 Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is R145 patient toward you, not R146 wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

A New Heaven and Earth

10 But the R147 day of the Lord will R148 come like a thief, in which the R149 heavens will R150 pass away with a roar and the elements R151 will be destroyed with intense heat, and the R152 earth and its F21 works will be burned F22 up.

11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking R153 for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the R154 heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements R155 will melt with intense heat! 13 But according to His promise R156 we are looking for new R157 heavens and a new earth, in R158 which righteousness dwells.

14 Therefore, R159 beloved, R160 since you look for these things, be diligent to be found R161 by Him in peace, spotless R162 and blameless, 15 and regard the patience R163 of our Lord as salvation; just as also our R164 beloved brother Paul, according R165 to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, 16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these R166 things, in R167 which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable R168 distort, as they do also the R169 rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. 17 You therefore, beloved, R170 knowing this beforehand, be R171 on your guard so that you are not carried away by the R172 error of unprincipled R173 men and fall R174 from your own steadfastness, 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge R175 of our Lord R176 and Savior Jesus Christ. To R177 Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
