Acceptance and Opposition

1 In Iconium R795 they R796 entered the synagogue of the Jews together, and spoke in such a manner that R797 a large number of people believed, both of Jews and of Greeks. R798 2 But the R799 Jews who disbelieved R800 F335 stirred up the minds F336 of the Gentiles and embittered them against the R801 brethren. 3 Therefore they spent a long time there speaking R802 boldly with reliance upon the Lord, who was testifying to the word of His grace, granting that signs R803 F337 and wonders be done by their hands. 4 But R804 the people F338 of the city were divided; and some sided F339 with the R805 Jews, and some with the R806 apostles. 5 And when an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and the R807 Jews with their rulers, to mistreat and to stone R808 them, 6 they became aware of it and fled to the cities of Lycaonia, R809 Lystra R810 and Derbe, R811 and the surrounding region; 7 and there they continued to preach R812 the gospel.

8 At Lystra R813 a R814 man was sitting who had no strength in his feet, lame from his mother's womb, who had never walked. 9 This man was listening to Paul as he spoke, who, when R815 he had fixed his gaze on him and had seen that he had faith R816 to be made F340 well, 10 said with a loud voice, "Stand upright on your feet." And R817 he leaped up and began to walk. 11 When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they raised their voice, saying in the Lycaonian R818 language, "The R819 gods have become like men and have come down to us." 12 And they began calling Barnabas, Zeus, F341 and Paul, Hermes, F342 because he was the F343 chief speaker. 13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just F344 outside the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, and wanted R820 to offer sacrifice with the crowds. 14 But when the R821 apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore R822 their robes F345 and rushed out into the crowd, crying out 15 and saying, "Men, why are you doing these things? We are also men R823 of the same nature as you, and preach R824 the gospel to you that you should turn from these vain R825 F346 things to a living R826 God, WHO R827 MADE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM. 16 "In F347 the generations gone by He permitted R828 all the nations F348 to go R829 their own ways; 17 and yet He R830 did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good and gave R831 you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying F349 your hearts with food and gladness." 18 Even saying these things, with difficulty they restrained the crowds from offering sacrifice to them.

19 But Jews R832 came from Antioch R833 and Iconium, R834 and having won over the crowds, they stoned R835 Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be dead. 20 But while the R836 disciples stood around him, he got up and entered the city. The next day he went away with Barnabas to Derbe. R837 21 After they had preached R838 the gospel to that city and had made R839 many disciples, they returned to Lystra R840 and to Iconium R841 and to Antioch, R842 22 strengthening the souls of the R843 disciples, encouraging them to continue in the R844 faith, and saying, "Through R845 many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God." 23 When they R846 had appointed elders R847 for them in every church, having prayed R848 with fasting, they commended R849 them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

24 They passed through Pisidia R850 and came into Pamphylia. R851 25 When they had spoken the word in Perga, R852 they went down to Attalia. 26 From there they sailed to Antioch, R853 from which R854 they had been commended R855 to the grace of God for the work that they had accomplished. F350 27 When they had arrived and gathered the church together, they began to report R856 all things that God had done with them and how F351 He had opened a door R857 of faith to the Gentiles. 28 And they spent a F352 long time with the R858 disciples.
