Paul at Thessalonica

1 Now when they had traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, R1009 where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 And according R1010 to Paul's custom, he went to them, and for three Sabbaths R1011 reasoned with them from the R1012 Scriptures, 3 explaining F391 and giving F392 evidence that the Christ F393 had R1013 to suffer and rise R1014 again from the dead, and saying, "This R1015 Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ." F393 4 And R1016 some of them were persuaded and joined Paul R1017 and Silas, along F394 with a large number of the God-fearing R1018 Greeks R1019 and a F395 number of the leading R1020 women. 5 But the R1021 Jews, becoming jealous and taking along some wicked men from the market place, formed a mob and set the city in an uproar; and attacking the house of Jason, R1022 they were seeking to bring them out to the people. 6 When they did not find them, they began dragging R1023 Jason and some brethren before the city authorities, shouting, "These men who have upset the R1024 F396 world have come here also; 7 and F397 Jason has R1025 welcomed them, and they all act contrary R1026 to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus." 8 They stirred up the crowd and the city authorities who heard these things. 9 And when they had received a pledge F398 from Jason R1027 and the others, they released them.

Paul at Berea

10 The R1028 brethren immediately sent Paul R1029 and Silas away by night to Berea, R1030 and F399 when they arrived, they went into the R1031 synagogue of the Jews. 11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, R1032 for F400 they received the word with great F401 eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. 12 Therefore many R1033 of them believed, along F402 with a number of prominent R1034 Greek women R1035 and men. 13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica R1036 found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul in Berea R1037 also, they came there as well, agitating and stirring up the crowds. 14 Then immediately the R1038 brethren sent Paul out to go as far as the sea; and Silas R1039 and Timothy R1040 remained there. 15 Now those R1041 who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens; R1042 and receiving a command for Silas R1043 and Timothy to come R1044 to him as soon as possible, they left.

Paul at Athens

16 Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, R1045 his spirit was being provoked within him as he was observing the city full of idols. 17 So he was reasoning in R1046 the synagogue with the Jews and the R1047 God-fearing Gentiles, and in the market place every day with those who happened to be present. 18 And also some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing F403 with him. Some were saying, "What would this R1048 idle F404 babbler wish to say?" Others, "He seems to be a proclaimer of strange deities,"--because he was preaching Jesus R1049 and the resurrection. 19 And they took R1050 him and brought him to F405 the Areopagus, R1051 F406 saying, "May we know what this R1052 new teaching is which F407 you are proclaiming? 20 "For you are bringing some strange things to our ears; so we want to know what these things mean." 21 (Now all the Athenians and the strangers visiting R1053 there used to spend their time in nothing other than telling or hearing something new.)

Sermon on Mars Hill

22 So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus F408 and said, "Men of Athens, R1054 I observe that you are very religious R1055 in all respects. 23 "For while I was passing through and examining the objects R1056 of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, `TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.' Therefore what you R1057 worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. 24 "The R1058 God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord R1059 of heaven and earth, does not dwell R1060 in temples made with hands; 25 nor is He served by human hands, as R1061 though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; 26 and He R1062 made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined R1063 their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, 27 that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though R1064 He is not far from each one of us; 28 for in R1065 Him we live and move and exist, F409 as even some of your own poets have said, `For we also are His children.' 29 "Being then the children of God, we ought R1066 not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and thought of man. 30 "Therefore having overlooked R1067 the R1068 times of ignorance, God is now R1069 declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because He has fixed a R1070 day in which He R1071 will judge the R1072 F410 world in righteousness through F411 a Man whom He has appointed, R1073 having furnished proof to all men by F412 raising R1074 Him from the dead."

32 Now when they heard of the R1075 resurrection of the dead, some began to sneer, but others said, "We shall hear you again F413 concerning this." 33 So Paul went out of their midst. 34 But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite R1076 and a woman named Damaris and others with them.
