The Council at Jerusalem

1 Then after an interval of fourteen years I went R51 up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, R52 taking Titus R53 along also. 2 It F15 was because of a revelation R54 that I went up; and I submitted to them the gospel R55 which I preach among the Gentiles, but I did so in private to those who were of reputation, for fear that I might be running, R56 or had run, in vain. 3 But not even Titus, R57 who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled R58 to be circumcised. 4 But it was because of the false R59 brethren secretly brought in, who had R60 sneaked in to spy out our liberty R61 which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring R62 us into bondage. 5 But we did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that the R63 truth of the gospel would remain with you. 6 But from those who were F16 of high reputation R64 (what they were makes no difference to me; God R65 shows F17 no partiality)--well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me. 7 But on the contrary, seeing that I had been entrusted R66 with the gospel R67 to F18 the uncircumcised, just as Peter R68 had been to F19 the circumcised 8 (for He who effectually worked for Peter in his apostleship R69 to F20 the circumcised effectually worked for me also to the Gentiles), 9 and recognizing the R70 grace that had been given to me, James R71 F21 and Cephas R72 and John, who were reputed R73 to be pillars, R74 gave to me and Barnabas R75 the right R76 hand F22 of fellowship, so that we might go R77 to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. 10 They only asked us to remember the poor--the R78 very thing I also was eager to do.

Peter (Cephas) Opposed by Paul

11 But when Cephas R79 came to Antioch, R80 I opposed him to his face, because he stood F23 condemned. 12 For prior to the coming of certain men from James, R81 F24 he used to eat R82 with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing R83 the F25 party of the circumcision. 13 The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas R84 was carried away by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they were R85 not straightforward F26 about the R86 truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas R87 in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live R88 like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews? F27

15 "We are Jews R89 by nature and not sinners R90 from among the Gentiles; 16 nevertheless knowing that a R91 man is not justified by the works of the F28 Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith R92 in Christ and not by the works of the F28 Law; since by R93 the works of the F28 Law no flesh F29 will be justified. 17 "But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found sinners, R94 is Christ then a minister of sin? May R95 it never be! 18 "For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove R96 myself to be a transgressor. 19 "For through the F30 Law I died R97 to the F30 Law, so that I might live to God. 20 "I have been crucified R98 with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ R99 lives in me; and the F31 life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the R100 Son of God, who loved R101 me and gave R102 Himself up for me. 21 "I do not nullify the grace of God, for if R103 righteousness comes through the F32 Law, then Christ died needlessly."
