Chaldeans Used to Punish Judah

1 The oracle R1 F1 which Habakkuk the prophet saw.

2 How R2 long, O LORD, will I call for help,

And You will not hear?

I cry out to You, "Violence!"

Yet You do not R3 save.

3 Why do You make me see R4 iniquity,

And cause me to look on wickedness?

Yes, destruction R5 and violence are before me;

Strife R6 exists and contention arises.

4 Therefore the law R7 is ignored F2

And justice is F3 never upheld.

For the wicked surround R8 the righteous;

Therefore justice comes out perverted. R9

5 "Look R10 among the nations! Observe!

Be astonished! Wonder! R11

Because I am doing something R12 in your days--

You would not believe if you F4 were told.

6 "For behold, I am raising R13 up the Chaldeans,

That fierce F5 and impetuous people

Who march throughout F6 the earth

To seize R14 F7 dwelling places which are not theirs.

7 "They are dreaded and feared; R15

Their justice R16 and authority F8 originate F9 with themselves.

8 "Their horses R17 are swifter than leopards

And keener F10 than wolves R18 in the evening.

Their horsemen F11 come galloping,

Their horsemen come from afar;

They fly like an eagle R19 swooping down to devour.

9 "All of them come for violence.

Their F12 horde of faces R20 moves forward.

They collect captives like sand.

10 "They mock R21 at kings

And rulers are a laughing matter to them.

They laugh R22 at every fortress

And heap R23 up rubble to capture it.

11 "Then they will sweep through like the wind R24 and pass on.

But they will be held guilty, R25

They whose strength R26 is their god."

12 Are You not from everlasting, R27

O LORD, my God, my Holy One?

We will not die.

You, O LORD, have appointed R28 them to judge;

And You, O Rock, R29 have established them to correct.

13 Your eyes are too pure R30 to approve F13 evil,

And You can not look on wickedness with favor.

Why do You look R31 with favor

On those who deal treacherously? R32

Why are You silent R33 when the wicked swallow R34 up

Those more righteous than they?

14 Why have You made men like the fish of the sea,

Like creeping things without a ruler over them?

15 The Chaldeans bring R35 all of them up with a hook,

Drag R36 them away with their net,

And gather them together in their fishing net.

Therefore they rejoice and are glad.

16 Therefore they offer a sacrifice to their net

And burn F14 incense to their fishing net;

Because through these R37 things their catch F15 is large, F16

And their food is plentiful. F17

17 Will they therefore empty their net R38

And continually slay R39 nations without sparing?
