God Answers the Prophet

1 I will stand R40 on my guard post

And station myself on the rampart;

And I will keep R41 watch to see what R42 He will speak to me,

And how I may reply when F18 I am reproved.

2 Then the LORD answered me and said,

"Record R43 the vision

And inscribe it on tablets,

That the F19 one who reads F20 it may run.

3 "For the vision is yet for the appointed R44 time;

It hastens F21 toward the goal and it will not fail. F22

Though it tarries, wait R45 for it;

For it will certainly come, it will R46 not delay.

4 "Behold, as for the proud R47 one,

His soul is not right within him;

But the righteous R48 will live by his faith. F23

5 "Furthermore, wine R49 betrays the haughty R50 man,

So that he does not stay R51 at home.

He enlarges R52 his appetite like Sheol,

And he is like death, never satisfied.

He also gathers to himself all nations

And collects to himself all peoples.

6 "Will not all of these take R53 up a taunt-song against him,

Even mockery and insinuations against him

And say, `Woe R54 to him who increases what is not his--

For how long--

And makes himself rich F24 with loans?'

7 "Will not your F25 creditors rise R55 up suddenly,

And those who collect F26 from you awaken?

Indeed, you will become plunder for them.

8 "Because you have looted R56 many nations,

All the remainder of the peoples will loot you--

Because of human bloodshed and violence done F27 to the land,

To the town and all its inhabitants.

9 "Woe to him who gets evil R57 gain for his house

To put R58 his nest on high,

To be delivered from the hand of calamity!

10 "You have devised a shameful R59 thing for your house

By cutting off many peoples;

So you are sinning R60 against yourself.

11 "Surely the stone R61 will cry out from the wall,

And the rafter will answer it from the framework. F28

12 "Woe to him who builds R62 a city with bloodshed

And founds a town with violence! F29

13 "Is it not indeed from the LORD of hosts

That peoples toil R63 for fire,

And nations grow weary for nothing?

14 "For the earth will be filled R64

With the knowledge of the glory of the LORD,

As the waters cover the sea.

15 "Woe to you who make your F30 neighbors drink,

Who mix in your venom even to make them drunk

So as to look on their nakedness!

16 "You will be filled with disgrace rather than honor.

Now you yourself drink R65 and expose F31 your own nakedness.

The cup R66 in the LORD'S right hand will come around to you,

And utter R67 disgrace will come upon your glory.

17 "For the violence R68 done F32 to Lebanon will overwhelm F33 you,

And the devastation of its beasts by F34 which you terrified them,

Because R69 of human bloodshed and violence R70 done F35 to the land,

To the town and all its inhabitants.

18 "What profit R71 is the idol F36 when its maker has carved it,

Or an F37 image, a teacher R72 of falsehood?

For its maker trusts R73 in his own handiwork

When he fashions speechless idols.

19 "Woe to him who says R74 to a piece of wood, `Awake!' R75

To a mute stone, `Arise!'

And that is your teacher?

Behold, it is overlaid with gold R76 and silver,

And there is no R77 breath at all inside it.

20 "But the LORD R78 is in His holy temple.

Let F38 all the earth be R79 silent before Him."
