The Perfect High Priest

1 For every high priest taken R152 from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things R153 pertaining to God, in order to offer R154 both gifts and sacrifices for R155 sins; 2 he R156 F33 can deal gently with the ignorant R157 and misguided, R158 since he himself also is beset R159 F34 with weakness; 3 and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices for R160 sins, as R161 for the people, so also for himself. 4 And no R162 one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as R163 Aaron was.

5 So also Christ did R164 not glorify Himself so as to become a high R165 priest, but He who said R166 to Him, "YOU R167 ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"; 6 just as He says also in another passage, "YOU R168 ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE R169 ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK." 7 In F35 the days of His flesh, He R170 F36 offered up both prayers and supplications with loud R171 crying and tears to the One able R172 to save Him from F37 death, and He was F38 heard because of His piety. R173 8 Although He was a R174 Son, He learned obedience R175 from the things which He suffered. 9 And having been made perfect, R176 He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, 10 being designated by God as a R177 high priest according to the R178 order of Melchizedek.

11 Concerning him F39 we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by F40 this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the R179 elementary R180 F41 principles of the oracles R181 of God, and you have come to need milk R182 and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. R183 14 But solid food is for the R184 mature, who because of practice have their senses trained R185 to discern R186 good and evil.
