God Commands That Babylon Be Taken

1 The oracle R736 F259 concerning the wilderness R737 F260 of the sea. As windstorms R738 in the Negev F261 sweep on, It comes from the wilderness, from a terrifying land.

2 A harsh R739 vision has been shown to me;

The treacherous R740 one still deals treacherously, and the destroyer still destroys.

Go up, Elam, R741 lay siege, Media;

I have made an end of all the F262 groaning she has caused.

3 For this reason my loins R742 are full of anguish;

Pains have seized me like the pains of a woman R743 in labor.

I am so bewildered I cannot hear, so terrified I cannot see.

4 My mind F263 reels, horror F264 overwhelms me;

The twilight I longed for has been turned R744 for me into trembling.

5 They set R745 the table, they spread F265 out the cloth, they eat, they drink;

"Rise up, captains, oil the shields,"

6 For thus the Lord says to me, "Go, station the lookout, let him report R746 what he sees.

7 "When he sees riders, R747 horsemen in pairs,

A train of donkeys, a train of camels,

Let him pay close attention, very close attention."

8 Then the F266 lookout called, "O R748 Lord, I stand continually by day on the watchtower, And I am stationed every night at my guard post.

9 "Now behold, here comes a troop of riders, horsemen in pairs."

And one said, "Fallen, R749 fallen is Babylon;

And all the images R750 of her gods are F267 shattered on the ground."

10 O my threshed R751 people, and my afflicted F268 of the threshing floor!

What I have heard from the LORD of hosts,

The God of Israel, I make known to you.

Oracles about Edom and Arabia

11 The oracle F269 concerning Edom. R752 F270 One keeps calling to me from Seir, R753 "Watchman, how F271 far gone is the night? Watchman, how F271 far gone is the night?"

12 The watchman says,

"Morning comes but also night.

If you would inquire, inquire;

Come back again."

13 The oracle F272 about Arabia. R754 In the thickets of Arabia you must F273 spend the night, O caravans of Dedanites. R755

14 Bring water for F274 the thirsty,

O inhabitants of the land of Tema, R756

Meet the fugitive with bread.

15 For they have fled R757 from the swords,

From the drawn sword, and from the bent bow

And from the press of battle.

16 For thus the Lord said to me, "In a year, R758 as a F275 hired man would count it, all the splendor of Kedar R759 will terminate; 17 and the remainder R760 of the number of bowmen, the mighty men of the sons of Kedar, will be few; for the LORD God of Israel has R761 spoken."

F269: Or burden
F270: So the Gr; Hebrew Dumah, silence
F271: Lit what is the time of the night?
F271: Lit what is the time of the night?
