Jerusalem Is Warned

1 Woe, O Ariel, F393 Ariel F393 the city where David once camped! R1024

Add year to year, observe R1025 F394 your feasts on schedule.

2 I will bring distress to Ariel,

And she will be a city of lamenting and mourning; R1026

And she will be like an Ariel to me.

3 I will camp R1027 against you encircling F395 you,

And I will set siegeworks against you,

And I will raise up battle towers against you.

4 Then you will be R1028 brought low;

From the earth you will speak,

And from the dust where you are prostrate

Your words will come.

Your voice will also be like that of a spirit F396 from the ground,

And your speech will whisper from the dust.

5 But the multitude of your enemies F397 will become like fine dust, R1029

And the multitude of the ruthless R1030 ones like the chaff which blows F398 away;

And it will happen instantly, R1031 suddenly.

6 From the LORD of hosts you will be punished R1032 with thunder R1033 and earthquake and loud noise,

With whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a consuming fire.

7 And the multitude R1034 of all the nations who wage war against Ariel, F399

Even all who wage war against her and her stronghold, and who distress her,

Will be like a dream, a vision R1035 of the night.

8 It will be as when a hungry man dreams--

And behold, he is eating;

But when he awakens, his hunger F400 is not satisfied,

Or as when a thirsty man dreams--

And behold, he is drinking,

But when he awakens, behold, he is faint

And his thirst F400 is not quenched.

Thus R1036 the multitude of all the nations will be

Who wage war against Mount Zion.

9 Be R1037 delayed and wait,

Blind yourselves and be blind;

They become R1038 drunk, but not with wine,

They stagger, but not with strong drink.

10 For the LORD has poured over you a spirit of deep sleep, R1039

He has shut R1040 your eyes, the prophets;

And He has covered your heads, the seers.

11 The entire vision will be to you like the words of a sealed book, R1041 F401 which when they give it to the one who is F402 literate, saying, "Please read this," he will say, "I cannot, for it is sealed." 12 Then the book F403 will be given to the one who is F404 illiterate, saying, "Please read this." And he will say, "I cannot F405 read."

13 Then the Lord said, "Because this R1042 people draw near with their words F406 And honor Me with their lip F407 service, But they remove their hearts far from Me, And their reverence F408 for Me consists F409 of tradition F410 learned by rote,

14 Therefore behold, I will once again deal marvelously R1043 with this people, wondrously marvelous;

And the R1044 wisdom of their wise men will perish,

And the discernment of their discerning men will be concealed."

15 Woe to those who deeply hide R1045 their plans F411 from the LORD,

And whose deeds R1046 are done in a dark place,

And they say, "Who R1047 sees us?" or "Who knows us?"

16 You turn things around!

Shall the potter be considered as F412 equal with the clay,

That what R1048 is made would say to its maker, "He did not make me";

Or what is formed say to him who formed it, "He has no understanding"?

Blessing after Discipline

17 Is it not yet just a little while

Before F413 Lebanon will be turned into a fertile R1049 field,

And the fertile field will be considered as a forest?

18 On that day the deaf R1050 will hear words R1051 of a book,

And out of their gloom and darkness the eyes R1052 of the blind will see.

19 The afflicted R1053 also will increase their gladness in the LORD,

And the needy R1054 of mankind will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

20 For the ruthless R1055 will come to an end and the scorner R1056 will be finished,

Indeed all R1057 who are F414 intent on doing evil will be cut off;

21 Who cause F415 a person to be indicted by a word,

And ensnare R1058 him who adjudicates at the gate,

And defraud R1059 F416 the one in the right with meaningless F417 arguments.

22 Therefore thus says the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, R1060 concerning the house of Jacob: "Jacob shall R1061 not now be ashamed, nor shall his face now turn pale;

23 But when he F418 sees his children, R1062 the work R1063 of My hands, in his midst,

They will sanctify My name;

Indeed, they will sanctify R1064 the Holy One of Jacob

And will stand in awe of the God of Israel.

24 "Those who err R1065 in mind F419 will know R1066 the F420 truth,

And those who criticize F421 will accept R1067 F422 instruction.
