Judah Warned against Egyptian Alliance

1 "Woe to the rebellious R1068 children," declares the LORD,

"Who execute R1069 a plan, but not Mine,

And make R1070 F423 an alliance, but not of My Spirit,

In order to add sin to sin;

2 Who proceed R1071 down to Egypt

Without consulting R1072 Me, F424

To R1073 take refuge in the safety of Pharaoh

And to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!

3 "Therefore the safety of Pharaoh will be your R1074 shame

And the shelter in the shadow of Egypt, your humiliation.

4 "For their R1075 princes are at Zoan

And their ambassadors arrive at Hanes.

5 "Everyone will be ashamed R1076 because of a people who cannot profit them,

Who are not R1077 for help or profit, but for shame and also for reproach."

6 The oracle F425 concerning the beasts R1078 of the Negev. R1079 Through a land of distress R1080 and anguish, From where F426 come lioness and lion, viper and flying R1081 serpent, They carry R1082 their riches on the backs F427 of young donkeys And their treasures on camels' R1083 humps, To a people who cannot profit them;

7 Even Egypt, whose help R1084 is vain and empty.

Therefore, I have called her F428

"Rahab R1085 F429 who has been exterminated."

8 Now go, write R1086 it on a tablet before them

And inscribe it on a scroll,

That it may serve F430 in the time to come

As F431 a witness forever.

9 For this is a rebellious R1087 people, false R1088 sons,

Sons who refuse F432 to listen R1089

To the instruction F433 of the LORD;

10 Who say to the seers, R1090 "You must not see visions";

And to the prophets, "You must not prophesy R1091 to us what is right,

Speak R1092 to us pleasant F434 words,

Prophesy illusions.

11 "Get out of the way, turn R1093 aside from the path,

Let R1094 F435 us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel."

12 Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel, "Since R1095 you have rejected this word And have put your trust in oppression R1096 and guile, and have relied on them,

13 Therefore this iniquity R1097 will be to you

Like a breach R1098 about to fall,

A bulge in a high wall,

Whose collapse comes suddenly R1099 in an instant,

14 Whose collapse is like the smashing of a potter's R1100 jar,

So F436 ruthlessly shattered

That a sherd will not be found among its pieces

To take F437 fire from a hearth

Or to scoop water from a cistern."

15 For thus the Lord GOD F438 , the Holy One of Israel, has said, "In repentance F439 and rest R1101 you will be saved, In quietness R1102 and trust is your strength." But you were not willing,

16 And you said, "No, for we will flee on horses," R1103

Therefore you shall flee!

"And we will ride on swift horses,"

Therefore those who pursue you shall be swift.

17 One R1104 thousand will flee at the threat of one man;

You will flee at the threat of five,

Until you are left as a flag F440 on a mountain top

And as a signal on a hill.

God Is Gracious and Just

18 Therefore the LORD longs R1105 F441 to be gracious to you,

And therefore He waits F442 on high R1106 to have compassion on you.

For the LORD is a God R1107 of justice;

How blessed are all those who long R1108 F443 for Him.

19 O F444 people in Zion, inhabitant R1109 in Jerusalem, you will weep R1110 no longer. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when He hears it, He will answer R1111 you. 20 Although the Lord has given you bread R1112 of privation and water of oppression, He, your Teacher will no longer hide R1113 Himself, but your eyes will behold your Teacher. 21 Your ears will hear a word behind you, "This F445 is the way, R1114 walk in it," whenever you turn R1115 to the right or to the left. 22 And you will defile your graven images R1116 overlaid with silver, and your molten images R1116 plated with gold. You will scatter them as an impure thing, and say to them, F446 "Be R1117 gone!"

23 Then He will give R1118 you rain for the F447 seed which you will sow in the ground, and bread from the yield of the ground, and it will be rich F448 and plenteous; F449 on that day your R1119 livestock will graze in a roomy pasture. 24 Also the oxen and the donkeys which work the ground will eat salted fodder, which has F450 been winnowed R1120 with shovel and fork. 25 On every lofty mountain and on every R1121 high hill there will be streams F451 running with water on the day of the great slaughter, R1122 when the towers fall. 26 The R1123 light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter, like the light of seven days, on the day the R1124 LORD binds up the fracture R1125 of His people and heals R1126 the bruise He F452 has inflicted.

27 Behold, the R1127 name of the LORD comes from a remote F453 place;

Burning R1128 is His anger and dense F454 is His smoke; F455

His lips are filled with indignation R1129

And His tongue is like a consuming R1130 fire;

28 His breath R1131 is like an overflowing torrent,

Which reaches R1132 to the neck,

To shake R1133 the nations back and forth in a sieve, F456

And to put in the jaws of the peoples the R1134 bridle which leads F457 to ruin.

29 You will have songs F458 as in the night when you keep the festival,

And gladness of heart as when one marches to the sound of the flute,

To go to the mountain of the LORD, to the Rock of Israel.

30 And the LORD will cause His F459 voice of authority to be heard,

And the descending F460 of His arm to be seen in fierce anger,

And in the flame of a consuming fire

In cloudburst, downpour and hailstones.

31 For at R1135 the voice of the LORD Assyria R1136 will be terrified,

When He strikes with the rod. R1137

32 And every blow F461 of the rod R1138 F462 of punishment,

Which the LORD will lay on him,

Will be with the music of tambourines R1139 and lyres;

And in battles, brandishing R1140 weapons, He will fight them.

33 For Topheth R1141 F463 has long been ready,

Indeed, it has been prepared for the king.

He has made it deep and large,

A F464 pyre of fire with plenty of wood;

The breath R1142 of the LORD, like a torrent of brimstone, R1143 sets it afire.
