The Greatness of God

1 "Comfort, R1475 O comfort My people," says your God.

2 "Speak R1476 kindly F570 to Jerusalem;

And call out to her, that her warfare R1477 F571 has ended,

That her iniquity R1478 F572 has been removed,

That she has received of the LORD'S hand

Double R1479 for all her sins."

3 A R1480 voice is F573 calling,

"Clear R1481 the way for the LORD in the wilderness;

Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God.

4 "Let every valley be lifted up,

And every mountain and hill be made low;

And let the rough ground become a plain,

And the rugged terrain a broad valley;

5 Then F574 the glory R1482 of the LORD will be revealed,

And all R1483 flesh will see it together;

For the mouth R1484 of the LORD has spoken."

6 A voice says, "Call out."

Then he F575 answered, "What shall I call out?"

All R1485 flesh is grass, and all its loveliness F576 is like the flower of the field.

7 The grass R1486 withers, the flower fades,

When F577 the breath R1487 of the LORD blows upon it;

Surely the people are grass.

8 The grass withers, the flower fades,

But the R1488 word of our God stands forever.

9 Get yourself up on a high R1489 mountain,

O Zion, bearer of good R1490 news,

Lift up your voice mightily,

O Jerusalem, bearer of good news;

Lift it up, do not fear.

Say to the cities R1491 of Judah,

"Here R1492 is your God!"

10 Behold, the Lord GOD F578 will come with R1493 might,

With His arm R1494 ruling for Him.

Behold, His reward R1495 is with Him

And His recompense before Him.

11 Like a shepherd He will tend R1496 His flock,

In His arm He will gather the lambs

And carry them in His bosom;

He will gently lead the nursing ewes.

12 Who has measured R1497 the waters F579 in the hollow of His hand,

And marked off the heavens by the span, F580

And calculated F581 the dust of the earth by the measure,

And weighed the mountains in a balance

And the hills in a pair of scales?

13 Who R1498 has directed F582 the Spirit of the LORD,

Or as His counselor R1499 has informed Him?

14 With R1500 whom did He consult and who gave R1501 Him understanding?

And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge

And informed Him of the way of understanding?

15 Behold, the nations R1502 are like a drop from a bucket,

And are regarded as a speck of dust R1503 on the scales;

Behold, He lifts up the islands F583 like fine dust.

16 Even Lebanon is not enough to burn,

Nor its beasts R1504 enough for a burnt offering.

17 All R1505 the nations are as nothing before Him,

They are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless. F584

18 To R1506 whom then will you liken God?

Or what likeness will you compare with Him?

19 As for the idol, R1507 F585 a craftsman casts it,

A goldsmith plates R1508 it with gold,

And a silversmith fashions chains of silver.

20 He who is too impoverished for such an offering

Selects a tree R1509 that does not rot;

He seeks out for himself a skillful craftsman

To prepare F586 an F587 idol that will R1510 not totter.

21 Do R1511 you not know? Have you not heard?

Has it not been declared to you from the beginning?

Have you not understood from R1512 the foundations of the earth?

22 It is He who sits F588 above the circle R1513 F589 of the earth,

And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, R1514

Who stretches R1515 out the heavens like a curtain R1516

And spreads them out like a tent R1517 to dwell in.

23 He it is who reduces rulers R1518 to nothing,

Who makes R1519 the judges of the earth meaningless. F590

24 Scarcely F591 have they been planted,

Scarcely F591 have they been sown,

Scarcely F591 has their stock taken root in the earth,

But He merely blows on them, and they wither,

And the storm R1520 carries them away like stubble.

25 "To R1521 whom then will you liken Me

That I would be his equal?" says the Holy One.

26 Lift R1522 up your eyes on high

And see who R1523 has created these stars,

The One R1524 who leads forth their host by number,

He calls them all by name;

Because of the greatness R1525 of His might and the strength F592 of His power,

Not R1526 one of them is missing.

27 Why R1527 do you say, O Jacob, and assert, O Israel,

"My way is hidden R1528 from the LORD,

And the justice R1529 due me escapes F593 the notice of my R1530 God"?

28 Do R1531 you not know? Have you not heard?

The Everlasting R1532 God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth

Does not become weary or tired.

His understanding is inscrutable. R1533

29 He gives strength to the weary, R1534

And to him who lacks might He increases R1535 power.

30 Though youths R1536 grow weary and tired,

And vigorous young R1537 men stumble badly,

31 Yet those who wait F594 for the LORD

Will gain R1538 new strength;

They will mount R1539 F595 up with wings F596 like eagles,

They will run and not get tired,

They will walk and not become weary.
