God's Promise concerning His Servant

1 "Behold, R1607 My Servant, R1608 whom I uphold; F607

My chosen R1609 one in whom My soul R1610 delights.

I have put My Spirit R1611 upon Him;

He will bring forth justice R1612 to the nations. F608

2 "He will not cry out or raise His voice,

Nor make His voice heard in the street.

3 "A bruised reed He will not break

And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish;

He will faithfully bring forth justice. R1613

4 "He will not be disheartened R1614 or crushed

Until He has established justice in the earth;

And the coastlands R1615 will wait expectantly for His law." F609

5 Thus says God the LORD, Who created R1616 the heavens and stretched R1617 them out, Who spread out the earth R1618 and its offspring, F610 Who gives R1619 breath to the people on it And spirit to those who walk in it,

6 "I am the LORD, I have called R1620 You in righteousness,

I will also hold R1621 You by the hand and watch R1622 over You,

And I will appoint You as a covenant R1623 to the people,

As a light R1624 to the nations,

7 To open R1625 blind eyes,

To bring R1626 out prisoners from the dungeon

And those who dwell in darkness from the prison.

8 "I R1627 am the LORD, that is My R1628 name;

I will not give My glory R1629 to another,

Nor My praise to graven F611 images.

9 "Behold, the former R1630 things have come to pass,

Now I declare new R1631 things;

Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you."

10 Sing to the LORD a new R1632 song,

Sing His praise from the end R1633 of the earth!

You R1634 who go down to the sea, and all R1635 that is in it.

You islands, R1636 and those who dwell on them.

11 Let the wilderness R1637 and its cities lift up their voices,

The settlements where Kedar R1638 inhabits.

Let the inhabitants of Sela R1639 sing aloud,

Let them shout for joy from the tops of the mountains. R1640

12 Let them give R1641 glory to the LORD

And declare His praise in the coastlands. R1642

13 The R1643 LORD will go forth like a warrior,

He will arouse His zeal R1644 like a man of war.

He will utter a shout, yes, He will raise a war cry.

He will prevail R1645 against His enemies.

The Blindness of the People

14 "I R1646 have kept silent for a long time,

I have kept still and restrained Myself.

Now like a woman in labor I will groan,

I will both gasp and pant.

15 "I will lay R1647 waste the mountains and hills

And wither all their vegetation;

I will make R1648 the rivers into coastlands

And dry up the ponds.

16 "I will lead R1649 the blind by a way they do not know,

In paths they do not know I will guide them.

I will make R1650 darkness into light before them

And rugged R1651 places into plains.

These are the things I will do,

And I will not R1652 leave them undone."

17 They will be turned back and be utterly R1653 put to shame,

Who trust in idols, F612

Who say to molten images,

"You are our gods."

18 Hear, R1654 you deaf!

And look, you blind, that you may see.

19 Who is blind but My servant, R1655

Or so deaf as My messenger R1656 whom I send?

Who is so blind as he that is at R1657 F613 peace with Me,

Or so blind as the servant of the LORD?

20 You R1658 have seen many things, but you do not observe them;

Your ears are open, but none hears.

21 The LORD was pleased for His righteousness' sake

To make the law great R1659 and glorious.

22 But this is a people plundered and despoiled;

All of them are trapped R1660 in caves, F614

Or are hidden R1661 away in prisons;

They have become a prey with none to deliver them,

And a spoil, with none to say, "Give them back!"

23 Who among you will give ear to this?

Who will give heed and listen hereafter?

24 Who gave Jacob up for spoil, and Israel to plunderers?

Was it not the LORD, against whom we have sinned,

And in whose ways they were R1662 not willing to walk,

And whose law they did not obey? R1663

25 So He poured out on him the heat of His anger

And the fierceness R1664 of battle;

And it set him aflame all around,

Yet he did not recognize it;

And it burned him, but he paid R1665 F615 no attention.
