Observances of Fasts

1 "Cry R2383 loudly, do not hold back;

Raise your voice like a trumpet,

And declare to My people their transgression R2384

And to the house of Jacob their sins.

2 "Yet they seek R2385 Me day by day and delight to know My ways,

As a nation that has done righteousness R2386

And has R2387 not forsaken the ordinance of their God.

They ask Me for just decisions,

They delight in R2388 the nearness of God.

3 `Why have we fasted R2389 and You do not see?

Why have we humbled ourselves and You do not notice?' F793

Behold, on the day R2390 of your fast you find your desire,

And drive hard all your workers.

4 "Behold, you fast for contention and strife R2391 and to strike with a wicked fist.

You do not fast like you do today to make R2392 your voice heard on high.

5 "Is it a fast like this which I choose, a day for a man to humble himself?

Is it for bowing one's F794 head like a reed

And for spreading out sackcloth R2393 and ashes as a bed?

Will you call this a fast, even an acceptable R2394 day to the LORD?

6 "Is this not the fast which I choose,

To loosen R2395 the bonds of wickedness,

To undo the bands of the yoke,

And to let R2396 the oppressed go free

And break R2397 every yoke?

7 "Is it not to divide R2398 your bread with F795 the hungry

And bring R2399 the homeless poor into the house;

When you see the naked, R2400 to cover him;

And not to hide R2401 yourself from your own flesh?

8 "Then your light R2402 will break out like the dawn,

And your recovery R2403 will speedily spring forth;

And your righteousness R2404 will go before you;

The glory of the LORD R2405 will be your rear guard.

9 "Then you will call, R2406 and the LORD will answer;

You will cry, and He will say, `Here I am.'

If you remove R2407 the yoke from your midst,

The pointing R2408 F796 of the finger and speaking R2409 wickedness,

10 And if you give R2410 F797 yourself to the hungry

And satisfy the desire F798 of the afflicted,

Then your light R2411 will rise in darkness

And your gloom will become like midday.

11 "And the LORD R2412 will continually guide you,

And satisfy R2413 your desire F799 in scorched places,

And give R2414 strength to your bones;

And you will be like a watered R2415 garden,

And like a spring R2416 of water whose waters do not fail. F800

12 "Those from among you will rebuild R2417 the ancient ruins;

You will raise R2418 up the age-old foundations;

And you will be called the repairer of the breach, R2419

The restorer of the streets F801 in which to dwell.

Keeping the Sabbath

13 "If because of the sabbath, you turn R2420 your foot

From doing your own pleasure on My holy day,

And call the sabbath a delight, R2421 the holy day of the LORD honorable,

And honor it, desisting from your own R2422 ways,

From seeking your own pleasure

And speaking R2423 your own word,

14 Then you will take delight R2424 in the LORD,

And I will make you ride on R2425 the heights of the earth;

And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,

For the mouth R2426 of the LORD has spoken."
