Defeat of Pharaoh Foretold

1 That which came as the word of the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet concerning R2199 the nations.

2 To Egypt, R2200 concerning the army of Pharaoh R2201 Neco king of Egypt, which was by the Euphrates River at Carchemish, R2202 which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in the fourth R2203 year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

3 "Line R2204 up the shield and buckler, F468

And draw near for the battle!

4 "Harness the horses,

And mount F469 the steeds,

And take your stand with helmets on!

Polish R2205 the spears,

Put on the scale-armor! R2206

5 "Why have I seen it?

They are terrified,

They are drawing R2207 back,

And their mighty R2208 men are defeated

And have taken refuge in flight,

Without facing back;

Terror R2209 F470 is on every side!"

Declares the LORD.

6 Let not the swift R2210 man flee,

Nor the mighty man escape;

In the north beside the river Euphrates

They have stumbled R2211 and fallen.

7 Who is this that rises R2212 like the Nile,

Like the rivers whose waters surge about?

8 Egypt rises like the Nile,

Even like the rivers whose waters surge about;

And He has said, "I will rise R2213 and cover that land;

I will surely destroy R2214 the city and its inhabitants."

9 Go up, you horses, and drive R2215 F471 madly, you chariots,

That the mighty men may march F472 forward:

Ethiopia and Put, R2216 F473 that handle the shield,

And the Lydians, R2217 F474 that handle and bend the bow.

10 For that R2218 day belongs to the Lord GOD F475 of hosts,

A day of vengeance, R2219 so as to avenge Himself on His foes;

And the sword R2220 will devour and be satiated

And drink F476 its fill of their blood;

For there will be a slaughter R2221 for the Lord GOD F475 of hosts,

In the land of the north by the river Euphrates.

11 Go up R2222 to Gilead and obtain balm,

O R2223 virgin daughter of Egypt!

In vain have you multiplied remedies; F477

There is no R2224 healing for you.

12 The nations have heard of your shame, R2225

And the earth is full of your cry R2226 of distress;

For one warrior R2227 has stumbled over another, F478

And both of them have fallen down together.

13 This is the message F479 which the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming R2228 of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to smite R2229 the land of Egypt:

14 "Declare in Egypt and proclaim in Migdol, R2230

Proclaim also in Memphis and Tahpanhes; R2231

Say, `Take your stand and get yourself ready,

For the sword R2232 has devoured those around you.'

15 "Why have your mighty R2233 ones become prostrate?

They do not stand because the LORD has thrust R2234 them down.

16 "They have repeatedly stumbled; R2235

Indeed, they have fallen one against another.

Then they said, `Get up! And let R2236 us go back

To our own people and our native land

Away from the sword R2237 F480 of the oppressor.'

17 "They F481 cried there, `Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a R2238 big noise;

He has let the appointed time pass by!'

18 "As I live," declares the King R2239

Whose name is the LORD of hosts,

"Surely one shall come who looms up like Tabor R2240 among the mountains,

Or like Carmel R2241 by the sea.

19 "Make your baggage ready for exile, R2242

O daughter R2243 dwelling in Egypt,

For Memphis R2244 will become a desolation;

It will even be burned down and bereft F482 of inhabitants.

20 "Egypt is a pretty heifer, R2245

But a horsefly F483 is coming from R2246 the north--it is coming!

21 "Also her mercenaries R2247 in her midst

Are like fattened F484 calves, R2248

For even they too have turned back and have fled away together;

They did not stand their ground.

For the day of their calamity has come upon them,

The time of their punishment. R2249

22 "Its sound moves along like a serpent;

For they move on like F485 an army

And come to her as woodcutters with axes.

23 "They have cut down her forest," R2250 declares the LORD;

"Surely it will no more be found,

Even though they F486 are now more numerous than locusts R2251

And are without number.

24 "The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame,

Given over to the power F487 of the people R2252 of the north."

25 The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says, "Behold, I am going to punish Amon of Thebes, R2253 and Pharaoh, R2254 and Egypt along with her gods R2255 and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who trust R2256 in him. 26 "I shall give them over to the power F488 of those who are seeking R2257 their lives, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his officers. F489 Afterwards, R2258 however, it will be inhabited as in the days of old," declares the LORD.

27 "But as for you, O Jacob My servant, do R2259 not fear,

Nor be dismayed, O Israel!

For, see, I am going to save R2260 you from afar,

And your descendants from the land of their captivity;

And Jacob will return and be undisturbed R2261

And secure, with no one making him tremble.

28 "O Jacob My servant, do not fear," declares the LORD,

"For I R2262 am with you.

For I will make a full end of all the nations

Where I have driven you,

Yet I will not R2263 make a full end of you;

But I will correct R2264 you properly

And by no means leave you unpunished."
