Eliphaz Accuses and Exhorts Job

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite responded, F239

2 "Can a vigorous man R601 be of use to God,

Or a wise man be useful to himself?

3 "Is there any pleasure to the F240 Almighty if you are righteous,

Or profit if you make your ways perfect?

4 "Is it because of your reverence F241 that He reproves you,

That He enters R602 into judgment against you?

5 "Is not your R603 wickedness great,

And your iniquities without end?

6 "For you have taken R604 pledges of your brothers without cause,

And stripped R605 men F242 naked.

7 "To the weary you have given R606 no water to drink,

And from the hungry you have withheld R607 bread.

8 "But the earth belongs R608 to the mighty R609 man,

And the R610 honorable man dwells in it.

9 "You have sent widows R611 away empty,

And the strength F243 of the orphans R612 has been crushed.

10 "Therefore snares R613 surround you,

And sudden dread R614 terrifies you,

11 Or darkness, R615 so that you cannot see,

And an abundance R616 of water covers you.

12 "Is not God in R617 the height of heaven?

Look also at the distant F244 stars, how high they are!

13 "You say, `What R618 does God know?

Can He judge through the thick darkness?

14 `Clouds R619 are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see;

And He walks on the vault F245 of heaven.'

15 "Will you keep to the ancient path

Which wicked R620 men have trod,

16 Who were snatched away before R621 their time,

Whose foundations R622 were washed F246 away by a river?

17 "They said R623 to God, `Depart from us!'

And `What can the F247 Almighty do to them?'

18 "Yet He filled R624 their houses with good things;

But the R625 counsel of the wicked is far from me.

19 "The righteous R626 see and are glad,

And the innocent mock them,

20 Saying, `Truly our adversaries are cut off,

And their abundance F248 the R627 fire has consumed.'

21 "Yield R628 F249 now and be at peace with Him;

Thereby good will come to you.

22 "Please receive instruction R629 F250 from His mouth

And establish His words in your heart.

23 "If you return R630 to the F251 Almighty, you will be restored; F252

If you remove R631 unrighteousness far from your tent,

24 And place R632 your gold F253 in the dust,

And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks,

25 Then the F254 Almighty will be your gold F255

And choice silver to you.

26 "For then you will delight R633 in the F256 Almighty

And lift up your face to God.

27 "You will pray R634 to Him, and He R635 will hear you;

And you will pay your vows.

28 "You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you;

And light R636 will shine on your ways.

29 "When you F257 are cast down, you will speak with confidence, F258

And the humble R637 F259 person He will save.

30 "He will deliver one who is not innocent,

And he will be delivered R638 through the cleanness of your hands."
