Job Asserts His Integrity

1 "I have made a covenant with my eyes; R817

How then could I gaze at a virgin?

2 "And what is the R818 portion of God from above

Or the heritage of the Almighty from on high?

3 "Is it not calamity R819 to the unjust

And disaster to those R820 who work iniquity?

4 "Does He not see R821 my ways

And number R822 all my steps?

5 "If I have walked R823 with falsehood,

And my foot has hastened after deceit,

6 Let Him weigh R824 me with accurate F345 scales,

And let God know my R825 integrity.

7 "If my step has turned R826 from the way,

Or my heart followed F346 my eyes,

Or if any spot R827 has stuck to my hands,

8 Let me sow R828 and another eat,

And let my crops R829 F347 be uprooted.

9 "If my heart has been enticed R830 by a woman,

Or I have lurked at my neighbor's doorway,

10 May my wife grind R831 for another,

And let others R832 kneel F348 down over her.

11 "For that would be a lustful R833 crime;

Moreover, it would be an R834 iniquity punishable by judges.

12 "For it would be fire R835 that consumes to Abaddon, R836 F349

And would uproot R837 all my increase. F350

13 "If I have despised R838 the claim of my male or female slaves

When they filed a complaint against me,

14 What then could I do when God arises?

And when He calls me to account, what will I answer Him?

15 "Did not He R839 who made me in the womb make him,

And the same one fashion us in the womb?

16 "If I have kept the R840 poor from their desire,

Or have caused the eyes of the R841 widow to fail,

17 Or have eaten R842 my morsel alone,

And the R843 orphan has not shared F351 it

18 (But from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,

And from infancy F352 I guided her),

19 If I have seen anyone perish for R844 lack of clothing,

Or that the R845 needy had no covering,

20 If his loins have not thanked F353 me,

And if he has not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep,

21 If I have lifted up my hand against the R846 orphan,

Because I saw I F354 had support in R847 the gate,

22 Let my shoulder fall from the socket, F355

And my arm R848 be broken off at F356 the elbow.

23 "For calamity R849 from God is a terror to me,

And because of His R850 majesty F357 I can do nothing.

24 "If I have put my confidence in gold, R851

And called fine gold my trust,

25 If I have gloated R852 because my wealth was great,

And because my hand had secured so much;

26 If I have looked R853 at the sun F358 when it shone

Or the moon going in splendor,

27 And my heart became secretly enticed,

And my hand threw F359 a kiss from my mouth,

28 That too would have been an R854 iniquity calling for judgment, F360

For I would have denied R855 God above.

29 "Have I rejoiced R856 at the extinction of my enemy,

Or exulted F361 when evil befell him?

30 "No, F362 I R857 have not allowed F363 my mouth to sin

By asking for his life in a R858 curse.

31 "Have the men of my tent not said,

`Who can find F364 one who has not been satisfied R859 with his meat'?

32 "The alien has not lodged outside,

For I have opened my doors to the traveler. F365

33 "Have I covered R860 my transgressions like Adam, F366

By hiding my iniquity in my bosom,

34 Because I feared R861 the great multitude,

And the contempt of families terrified me,

And kept silent and did not go out of doors?

35 "Oh that I had one to hear me!

Behold, here is my signature; F367

Let R862 the Almighty answer me!

And the indictment which my adversary R863 has written,

36 Surely I would carry it on my shoulder,

I would bind it to myself like a crown.

37 "I would declare to Him the R864 number of my steps;

Like a R865 prince I would approach Him.

38 "If my land R866 cries out against me,

And its furrows weep together;

39 If I have eaten R867 its fruit F368 without money,

Or have caused R868 its F369 owners to lose their lives,

40 Let briars R869 grow F370 instead of wheat,

And stinkweed instead of barley."

The words of Job are ended.
