The Deity of Jesus Christ

1 In R1 the beginning was the R2 Word, and the Word was with R3 God, and the R4 Word was God. 2 He F1 was in the beginning with God. 3 All R5 things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In R6 Him was life, and the life was the R7 Light of men. 5 The R8 Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend F2 it.

The Witness John

6 There came F3 a man sent from God, whose name was John. R9 7 He F4 came as R10 F5 a witness, to testify about the Light, so R11 that all might believe through him. 8 He R12 F6 was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

9 There was the R13 true Light which, F7 coming into the world, enlightens every man. 10 He was in the world, and the R14 world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, F8 and those who were His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children R15 of God, even to R16 those who believe in His name, 13 who R17 were born, F9 not of blood F10 nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

The Word Made Flesh

14 And the R18 Word became R19 flesh, and dwelt R20 F11 among us, and we R21 saw His glory, glory as of the F12 only begotten from the Father, full of grace R22 and truth. R23 15 John testified R24 about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, `He R25 who comes after me has F13 a higher rank than I, for R26 He existed before me.' " 16 For of His fullness R27 we F14 have all received, and grace F15 upon grace. 17 For the R28 Law was given through Moses; grace R29 and truth R30 were F16 realized through Jesus Christ. 18 No R31 one has seen God at any time; the R32 only begotten God who is in R33 the bosom of the Father, He R34 has explained Him.

The Testimony of John

19 This is the R35 testimony of John, when the R36 Jews sent to him priests and Levites from R37 Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" 20 And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, "I R38 am not the F17 Christ." 21 They asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" R39 And he said, "I am not." "Are you the R40 Prophet?" And he answered, "No." 22 Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?" 23 He said, "I am A R41 VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, `MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE LORD,' as Isaiah the prophet said."

24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, F18 nor Elijah, nor the R42 Prophet?" 26 John answered them saying, "I R43 baptize in F19 water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27 "It is He R44 who comes after me, the thong R45 of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." 28 These things took place in Bethany beyond R46 the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the R47 Lamb of God who takes R48 away the sin of the world! 30 "This is He on behalf of whom I said, `After R49 me comes a Man who has F20 a higher rank than I, for R50 He existed before me.' 31 "I did not recognize Him, F21 but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing in F22 water." 32 John testified R51 saying, "I R52 have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33 "I did not recognize Him, F23 but He who sent me to baptize in F24 water said to me, `He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this R53 is the One who baptizes in F24 the Holy Spirit.' 34 "I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the R54 Son of God."

Jesus' Public Ministry, First Converts

35 Again the R55 next day John was standing with F25 two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, "Behold, the R56 Lamb of God!" 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, "What do you seek?" They said to Him, "Rabbi R57 (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?" 39 He said to them, "Come, and you will see." So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth F26 hour. 40 One R58 of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" R59 (which translated means Christ). F27 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of John; R60 F28 you shall be called Cephas" R61 (which is translated Peter). R62 F29

43 The R63 next day He purposed to go into Galilee, R64 and He found Philip. R65 And Jesus said to him, "Follow R66 Me." 44 Now Philip R67 was from Bethsaida, R68 of the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip R69 found Nathanael R70 and said to him, "We have found Him of whom Moses R71 in the Law and also the R71 Prophets wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, R72 the R73 son of Joseph." 46 Nathanael said to him, "Can R74 any good thing come out of Nazareth?" Philip R75 said to him, "Come and see." 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite R76 indeed, in whom there is no deceit!" 48 Nathanael said to Him, "How do You know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip R77 called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." 49 Nathanael answered Him, "Rabbi, R78 You are the R79 Son of God; You are the King R80 of Israel." 50 Jesus answered and said to him, "Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these." 51 And He said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the R81 heavens opened and the R82 angels of God ascending and descending on the R83 Son of Man."
