Jeremiah Shares Israel's Affliction

1 I am the man who has seen R141 affliction

Because of the rod of His wrath.

2 He has driven me and made me walk

In darkness R142 and not in light.

3 Surely against me He has turned R143 His hand

Repeatedly all the day.

4 He has caused my flesh R144 and my skin to waste away,

He has broken R145 my bones.

5 He has besieged R146 and encompassed me with bitterness R147 and hardship.

6 In dark R148 places He has made me dwell,

Like those who have long been dead.

7 He has walled R149 me in so that I cannot go out;

He has made my chain R150 F41 heavy.

8 Even when I cry out and call for help,

He shuts R151 out my prayer.

9 He has blocked R152 my ways with hewn stone;

He has made my paths crooked.

10 He is to me like a bear lying in wait,

Like a lion in secret places.

11 He has turned aside my ways and torn R153 me to pieces;

He has made me desolate.

12 He bent R154 His bow

And set R155 me as a target for the arrow.

13 He made the arrows F42 of His quiver R156

To enter into my inward F43 parts.

14 I have become a laughingstock R157 to all my people,

Their mocking song R158 all the day.

15 He has filled R159 me with bitterness,

He has made me drunk with wormwood.

16 He has broken R160 my teeth with gravel; R161

He has made me cower in the dust. R162

17 My soul has been rejected from R163 peace;

I have forgotten happiness. F44

18 So I say, "My strength has perished,

And so has my hope R164 from the LORD."

Hope of Relief in God's Mercy

19 Remember my affliction and my wandering, F45 the wormwood R165 and bitterness.

20 Surely my R166 soul remembers

And is bowed R167 down within me.

21 This I recall to my mind,

Therefore I have hope. R168

22 The LORD'S lovingkindnesses R169 indeed F46 never cease,

For R170 His compassions never fail.

23 They are new every R171 morning;

Great is Your R172 faithfulness.

24 "The LORD is my portion," R173 says my soul,

"Therefore I have R174 hope in Him."

25 The LORD is good to those who wait R175 for Him,

To the person F47 who seeks R176 Him.

26 It is good that he waits R177 silently

For the salvation of the LORD.

27 It is good for a man that he should bear

The yoke in his youth.

28 Let him sit R178 alone and be silent

Since He has laid it on him.

29 Let him put F48 his mouth in the dust, R179

Perhaps there is hope. R180

30 Let him give his cheek R181 to the F49 smiter,

Let him be filled with reproach.

31 For the Lord will not R182 reject forever,

32 For if He causes grief,

Then He will have compassion R183

According to His abundant lovingkindness.

33 For He does R184 not afflict willingly F50

Or grieve the sons of men.

34 To crush under His feet

All the prisoners of the land, F51

35 To deprive F52 a man of justice R185

In the presence of the Most High,

36 To defraud R186 F53 a man in his lawsuit--

Of these things the Lord does not approve. F54

37 Who is there F55 who speaks and it comes R187 to pass,

Unless the Lord has commanded it?

38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High

That both R188 F56 good and ill go forth?

39 Why should any living mortal, F57 or any man,

Offer complaint R189 in F58 view of his sins?

40 Let us examine R190 and probe our ways,

And let us return to the LORD.

41 We lift R191 up our heart and F59 hands

Toward God in heaven;

42 We have transgressed R192 and rebelled,

You have not R193 pardoned.

43 You have covered Yourself with anger R194

And pursued R195 us;

You have slain and have R196 not spared.

44 You have covered R197 Yourself with a cloud

So that no R198 prayer can pass through.

45 You have made us mere offscouring R199 and refuse

In the midst of the peoples.

46 All our enemies have opened R200 their mouths against us.

47 Panic R201 and pitfall have befallen us,

Devastation and destruction;

48 My eyes R202 F60 run down with streams of water

Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.

49 My eyes pour down unceasingly, R203

Without stopping,

50 Until the LORD looks R204 down

And sees from heaven.

51 My eyes bring pain to my soul

Because of all the daughters of my city.

52 My enemies without R205 cause

Hunted me down like R206 a bird;

53 They have silenced me F61 in R207 the pit

And have placed R208 F62 a stone on me.

54 Waters flowed over R209 my head;

I said, "I am cut off!"

55 I called R210 on Your name, O LORD,

Out of the lowest pit.

56 You have heard R211 my voice,

"Do R212 not hide Your ear from my prayer for relief,

From my cry for help."

57 You drew R213 near when I called on You;

You said, "Do R214 not fear!"

58 O Lord, You have R215 pleaded my soul's cause;

You have redeemed R216 my life.

59 O LORD, You have seen R217 my oppression;

Judge R218 my case.

60 You have seen all their vengeance,

All their schemes R219 against me.

61 You have heard their reproach, R220 O LORD,

All their schemes against me.

62 The lips R221 of my assailants and their whispering

Are against me all day long.

63 Look on their sitting R222 and their rising;

I R223 am their mocking song.

64 You will recompense R224 them, O LORD,

According to the work of their hands.

65 You will give them hardness R225 F63 of heart,

Your curse will be on them.

66 You will pursue R226 them in anger and destroy them

From under the heavens R227 of the LORD!
