God's Love for Jacob

1 The oracle R1 F1 of the word of the LORD to Israel R2 through Malachi. F2

2 "I have loved R3 you," says the LORD. But you say, "How have You loved us?" "Was not Esau Jacob's brother?" declares the LORD. "Yet I have R4 loved Jacob; 3 but I have hated Esau, and I have made R5 his mountains a desolation and appointed his inheritance for the jackals of the wilderness." 4 Though Edom says, "We have been beaten R6 down, but we will return R7 F3 and build up the ruins"; thus says the LORD of hosts, "They may build, R8 but I will tear down; and men will call them the wicked F4 territory, and the people toward F5 whom the LORD is indignant forever." R9 5 Your eyes will see this and you will say, "The R10 LORD be F6 magnified beyond the border F7 of Israel!"

Sin of the Priests

6 " `A son honors R11 his father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a father, R12 where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is My respect?' F8 says the LORD of hosts to you, O priests R13 who despise My name. But you say, `How have we despised Your name?' 7 "You are presenting defiled R14 food R15 F9 upon My altar. But you say, `How have we defiled You?' In that you say, `The table R16 of the LORD is to be despised.' 8 "But when you present the blind R17 for sacrifice, is it not evil? And when you present the lame and sick, is it not evil? Why F10 not offer it to your governor? R18 Would he be pleased with you? Or would he receive you kindly?" says the LORD of hosts. 9 "But now will F11 you not entreat R19 God's favor, that He may be gracious to us? With F12 such an offering on your part, will He receive R20 any of you kindly?" says the LORD of hosts. 10 "Oh that there were one among you who would shut R21 the gates, F13 that you might not uselessly kindle fire on My altar! I am not pleased with you," says the LORD of hosts, "nor R22 will I accept an offering from you. F14 11 "For from the rising R23 of the sun even to its setting, My R24 name will be great R25 among the nations, and in every place incense R26 is going to be offered to My name, and a grain offering that is pure; for My name will be great R27 among the nations," says the LORD of hosts. 12 "But you are profaning R28 it, in that you say, `The table of the Lord is defiled, and as for its fruit, its food is to be despised.' 13 "You also say, `My, F15 how tiresome R29 it is!' And you disdainfully sniff at it," says the LORD of hosts, "and you bring what was taken by robbery R30 and what is lame R31 or sick; so you bring the offering! Should I receive R32 that from your hand?" says the LORD. 14 "But cursed be the swindler R33 who has a male in his flock and vows it, but sacrifices a blemished R34 animal to the Lord, for I am a great King," R35 says the LORD of hosts, "and My name is feared R36 F16 among the nations." F17
