The Prophet Acknowledges

1 Woe is me! For I am

Like the fruit pickers, like the grape R203 gatherers.

There is not a cluster of grapes to eat,

Or a first-ripe R204 fig which I F53 crave.

2 The godly F54 person has perished R205 from the land,

And there is no upright person among men.

All of them lie in wait for bloodshed; R206

Each of them hunts the other with a net. R207

3 Concerning evil, both hands do it well. R208

The prince asks, also the judge, for a bribe, R209

And a great man speaks the desire of his soul;

So they weave it together.

4 The best of them is like a briar, R210

The most upright like a thorn R211 hedge.

The day when you post your watchmen,

Your punishment R212 will come.

Then their confusion R213 will occur.

5 Do not trust R214 in a neighbor;

Do not have confidence in a friend.

From her who lies in your bosom

Guard your F55 lips.

6 For son R215 treats father contemptuously,

Daughter rises up against her mother,

Daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;

A R216 man's enemies are the men of his own household.

God Is the Source of Salvation and Light

7 But as for me, I will watch R217 expectantly for the LORD;

I will wait R218 for the God of my salvation.

My God R219 will hear me.

8 Do R220 not rejoice over me, O my R221 enemy.

Though I fall I will rise; R222

Though I dwell in darkness, the LORD is a light R223 for me.

9 I will bear the indignation of the LORD

Because I have sinned against Him,

Until He pleads R224 my case and executes justice for me.

He will bring me out to the light, R225

And I will see His righteousness. R226 F56

10 Then my enemy will see,

And shame will cover her who said R227 to me,

"Where is the LORD your God?"

My eyes will look on her;

At F57 that time she will be F58 trampled R228 down

Like mire of the streets.

11 It will be a day for building R229 your walls.

On that day will your boundary be extended.

12 It will be a day when they F59 will come R230 to you

From Assyria and the cities of Egypt,

From Egypt even to the Euphrates, F60

Even from sea to sea and mountain to mountain.

13 And the earth will become desolate R231 because of her inhabitants,

On account of the fruit R232 of their deeds.

14 Shepherd R233 Your people with Your scepter, R234

The flock of Your possession F61

Which dwells by itself in the woodland,

In the midst of a F62 fruitful field.

Let them feed in Bashan R235 and Gilead

As R236 in the days of old.

15 "As in the days when you came out from the land of Egypt,

I will show you R237 F63 miracles."

16 Nations will R238 see and be ashamed

Of all their might.

They will put R239 their hand on their mouth,

Their ears will be deaf.

17 They will lick R240 the dust like a serpent,

Like reptiles R241 of the earth.

They will come trembling R242 out of their fortresses; F64

To the LORD our God they will come in dread R243

And they will be afraid before You.

18 Who is a God like You, who pardons R244 iniquity

And passes over the rebellious act of the remnant R245 of His possession? F65

He does not retain R246 His anger forever,

Because He delights R247 in unchanging F66 love.

19 He will again have compassion on us;

He R248 will tread our iniquities under foot.

Yes, You will cast R249 all their F67 sins

Into the depths of the sea.

20 You will give truth R250 F68 to Jacob

And unchanging F69 love to Abraham,

Which You swore R251 to our forefathers

From the days of old.
