God Is Awesome

1 The oracle R1 F1 of Nineveh. R2 The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.

2 A jealous R3 and avenging God is the LORD;

The LORD is avenging R4 and wrathful. F2

The LORD takes vengeance R5 on His adversaries,

And He reserves wrath for His enemies.

3 The LORD is slow R6 to anger and great in power,

And the LORD will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.

In whirlwind R7 and storm is His way,

And clouds R8 are the dust beneath His feet.

4 He rebukes R9 the sea and makes it dry;

He dries up all the rivers.

Bashan R10 and Carmel wither;

The blossoms of Lebanon wither.

5 Mountains quake R11 because of Him

And the hills dissolve; R12

Indeed the earth is upheaved R13 by His presence,

The world R14 and all the inhabitants in it.

6 Who R15 can stand before His indignation?

Who can endure the burning R16 of His anger?

His wrath R17 is poured out like fire

And the rocks R18 are broken up by Him.

7 The LORD is good, R19

A stronghold in the day of trouble,

And He R20 knows those who take refuge in Him.

8 But with an overflowing R21 flood

He will make a complete end of its F3 site,

And will pursue His enemies into darkness. R22

9 Whatever you devise R23 against the LORD,

He will make a complete R24 end of it.

Distress will not rise up twice.

10 Like tangled thorns, R25

And like those who are drunken R26 with their drink,

They are consumed R27

As stubble completely withered.

11 From you has gone forth

One who plotted R28 evil against the LORD,

A wicked R29 F4 counselor.

12 Thus says the LORD, "Though they are at full strength and likewise many, Even so, they will be cut R30 off and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no R31 longer.

13 "So now, I will break R32 his yoke bar from upon you,

And I will tear off your shackles."

14 The LORD has issued a command concerning you: F5

"Your F6 name will no R33 longer be perpetuated.

I will cut off idol R34 F7 and image F8

From the house of your gods.

I will prepare your grave, R35

For you are contemptible."

15 Behold, F9 on R36 the mountains the feet of him who brings good news,

Who announces peace!

Celebrate R37 your feasts, O Judah;

Pay your vows.

For never R38 again will the wicked F10 one pass through you;

He is cut R39 off completely.
