A Father's Instruction

1 Hear, O sons, the instruction R140 of a father,

And give R141 attention that you may gain F28 understanding,

2 For I give you sound F29 teaching; R142

Do R143 not abandon my instruction. F30

3 When I was a son to my father,

Tender R144 and the R145 only son in the sight of my mother,

4 Then he taught R146 me and said to me,

"Let your heart hold R147 fast my words;

Keep R148 my commandments and live;

5 Acquire R149 wisdom! Acquire R150 understanding!

Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth.

6 "Do not forsake her, and she will guard you;

Love R151 her, and she will watch over you.

7 "The R152 beginning F31 of wisdom is: Acquire R153 wisdom;

And with all your acquiring, get understanding.

8 "Prize R154 her, and she will exalt you;

She will honor you if you embrace her.

9 "She will place on R155 your head a garland of grace;

She will present you with a crown of beauty."

10 Hear, my son, and accept R156 my sayings

And the years R157 of your life will be many.

11 I have directed R158 you in the way of wisdom;

I have led you in upright paths.

12 When you walk, your steps R159 will not be impeded;

And if you run, you will R160 not stumble.

13 Take R161 hold of instruction; do not let go.

Guard her, for she is your life. R162

14 Do R163 not enter the path of the wicked

And do not proceed in the way of evil men.

15 Avoid it, do not pass by it;

Turn away from it and pass on.

16 For they cannot R164 sleep unless they do evil;

And they F32 are robbed of sleep unless they make someone stumble.

17 For they eat R165 the bread of wickedness

And drink the wine of violence.

18 But the path R166 of the righteous is like the light R167 of dawn,

That shines R168 brighter and brighter until the full R169 day.

19 The way R170 of the wicked is like darkness;

They do not know over what they stumble. R171 F33

20 My son, give R172 attention to my words;

Incline R173 your ear to my sayings.

21 Do R174 not let them depart from your sight;

Keep R175 them in the midst of your heart.

22 For they are life R176 to those who find them

And health R177 to all their F34 body.

23 Watch over your heart with all diligence,

For from R178 it flow the springs of life.

24 Put away from you a deceitful R179 mouth

And put R180 devious speech F35 far from you.

25 Let your eyes look directly ahead

And let your gaze F36 be fixed straight in front of you.

26 Watch R181 the path of your feet

And all your ways R182 will be established.

27 Do R183 not turn to the right nor to the left;

Turn R184 your foot from evil.
