Salutation

1 Paul, a R1 bond-servant of God and an apostle R2 of Jesus Christ, for F1 the faith of those chosen R3 of God and the R4 knowledge of the truth which is according R5 to godliness, 2 in the R6 hope of eternal life, which God, who R7 cannot lie, promised R8 long R9 F2 ages ago, 3 but at R10 the proper time manifested, even His word, in the R11 proclamation with R12 which I was entrusted according R13 to the commandment of God R14 our Savior,

4 To Titus, R15 my R16 true child in F3 a common R17 faith: Grace R18 and peace from God the Father and Christ R19 Jesus our Savior.

Qualifications of Elders

5 For this reason I left you in Crete, R20 that you would set in order what remains and appoint R21 elders R22 in every city as I directed you, 6 namely, if R23 any man is above reproach, the husband R24 of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation R25 or rebellion. R26 7 For the overseer R27 F4 must be above reproach as God's R28 steward, not self-willed, R29 not quick-tempered, not addicted R30 to wine, not pugnacious, not R31 fond of sordid gain, 8 but hospitable, R32 loving R33 what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, 9 holding R34 fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound R35 doctrine and to refute those who contradict.

10 For R36 there are many rebellious R37 men, empty R38 talkers and deceivers, especially those R39 of the circumcision, 11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole R40 families, teaching things R41 they should not teach for R42 the sake of sordid gain. 12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans R43 are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons." 13 This testimony is true. For this reason reprove R44 them severely R45 so that they may be sound R46 in the faith, 14 not paying attention to Jewish myths R47 and commandments R48 of men who turn R49 away from the truth. 15 To R50 the pure, all things are pure; but to R51 those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind R52 and their conscience are defiled. 16 They R53 profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny R54 Him, being detestable R55 and disobedient R56 and worthless R57 for R58 any good deed.
