Hearts like Flint

1 In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, which is Chislev. R152 2 Now the town of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regemmelech and their F42 men to seek R153 F43 the favor of the LORD, 3 speaking to the priests R154 who belong to the house of the LORD of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, "Shall I weep in the fifth R155 month and F44 abstain, as I have done these many years?" 4 Then the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying, 5 "Say to all the people of the land and to the priests, `When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months these F45 seventy R156 years, was it actually for Me R157 that you fasted? 6 `When you eat and drink, do F46 you not eat for yourselves and do you not drink for yourselves? 7 `Are not these the words which the LORD proclaimed R158 by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and prosperous R159 F47 along with its cities around it, and the Negev R160 F48 and the foothills F49 were inhabited?' "

8 Then the word of the LORD came to Zechariah saying, 9 "Thus has the LORD of hosts said, `Dispense R161 true justice and practice kindness R162 and compassion each to his brother; 10 and do R163 not oppress the widow or the orphan, F50 the stranger F51 or the poor; and do not R164 devise evil in your hearts against one another.' 11 "But they refused R165 to pay attention and turned R166 F52 a stubborn shoulder and stopped R167 F53 their ears from hearing. 12 "They made their hearts R168 like flint R169 F54 so F55 that they could not hear the law and the words R170 which the LORD of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former R171 prophets; therefore great wrath R172 came from the LORD of hosts. 13 "And just as He R173 called and they would not listen, so they R174 called and I would not listen," says the LORD of hosts; 14 "but I scattered R175 F56 them with a storm R176 wind among all the nations whom they have not known. Thus the land is desolated R177 behind them so F57 that no R178 one went back and forth, for they made R179 the pleasant land desolate."
