CAINAN (cay i' nuhn) Personal name of unknown meaning. 1. Ancestor of Noah (Genesis 5:10-14), sometimes seen as a variant spelling of Cain (Genesis 4:17). He is included in Christ's ancestry (Luke 3:37). In 1 Chronicles 1:2 the name is spelled Kenan, a spelling used in other places by many modern translators. 2. Descendant of Noah listed in the Septuagint of Genesis 11:12 but not of Hebrew. Luke used this early Greek translation of the Old Testament and included Cainan in Christ's ancestors (Luke 3:36).
