Translation used in modern versions to refer to intestines and other entrails (Acts 1:18). In the KJV, “bowels” is also used to refer to the sexual reproductive system (2 Samuel 16:11;
Psalms 71:6) and, figuratively, to strong emotions (Job 30:27), especially love (Song of Solomon 5:4) and compassion (Colossians 3:12). Both Hebrew and Greek picture the entrails as the center of human emotions and excitement.
