Translation of several Hebrew and Greek terms referring to something that constrains, especially a shackle for the foot. Fetters were made of wood, bronze (Judges 16:21;
2 Chronicles 33:11), or iron (Psalms 149:8). Fetters worn on the feet were often joined by a rope or chain to hobble the prisoner (Mark 5:4). Fetters were painful to the feet (Psalms 105:18). Paul claimed that though he wore fetters, the word of God was not fettered (2 Timothy 2:9 REB, RSV).
