GALL

(of livers) Gall expressed by two different Hebrew words is used in three senses in connection with the liver: 1. as an organ, either the liver or the gallbladder, through which a sword might pass when one was run through (Job 20:25); 2. as bile, a sticky, yellow-greenish, alkaline fluid secreted by the liver, which might be poured out on the ground when one was disemboweled (Job 16:13); 3. in a figurative sense (Job 13:26) for bitterness (bitter things, NAS, NIV, NRSV; bitter charges, REB, TEV).
