The Greek gangraina (2 Timothy 2:17) can refer either to gangrene, a death of soft tissue resulting from problems with blood flow (NAS, NRSV, REB) or to an ulcer (canker, KJV; open sore, TEV). In 2 Timothy gangraina is used figuratively for false teachings which destroy people who accept them.
