JASPER

Green chalcedony. Jasper commonly translates two Hebrew and one Greek term. The first term is used for the sixth stone in the headdress of the king of Tyre (Ezekiel 28:13). The second term is used for a stone in the high priest's breastplate (Exodus 28:20; Exodus 39:13). This second term is rendered onyx at Ezekiel 28:13. The third term describes the face of the One seated on the throne (Revelation 4:3) and the glory of the new Jerusalem (Revelation 21:11,Revelation 21:18-19). The NIV used jasper to translate an obscure Hebrew term at Job 28:18. Other translation options include: alabaster (REB), crystal (NAS, NRSV, TEV), and pearls (KJV). See Minerals and Metals.
