(jehss' ssih) Personal name meaning, “man” or “manly.” Father of David the king (1 Samuel 16:1). He was a Judahite who lived in Bethlehem, the son of Obed and the grandson of Boaz and Ruth (1 Samuel 16:1;
Ruth 4:17). He had eight sons, of whom David was the youngest, and two daughters. He is mentioned in the genealogies of Jesus in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. See David.
