JOIARIB

(joy uh rihb) Short form of Jehoiarib meaning, “Yah establishes justice.” See Jehoiarib. 1. Member of group Ezra sent to get Levites to accompany him on return from Babylon to Jerusalem (Ezra 8:16). Many interpreters think Joiarib is a copyist's duplication of Jarib earlier in the verse. See Jarib. 2. Ancestor of member of tribe of Judah who lived in Jerusalem after the Exile (Nehemiah 11:5). 3. Father of priest who lived in Jerusalem after the Exile (Nehemiah 11:10). 4. Priest who returned to Jerusalem from Babylonian Exile about 537 B.C. with Zerubbabel (Nehemiah 12:6). 5. Leading priestly family after return from Exile (Nehemiah 12:19).
