MAASEIAH

(may' uh ssee uh) Personal name meaning, “work of Yahweh,” appearing in a longer and shorter Hebrew form. Several of the many scattered references perhaps refer to the same person, though it is no longer possible to press identifications: 1. Levite musician during David's reign (1 Chronicles 15:18,1 Chronicles 15:20). 2. Participant in high priest Jehoida's revolt which put Joash on the throne (2 Chronicles 23:1). 3. One of Uzziah's military officers (2 Chronicles 26:11). 4. Son of King Ahaz of Judah (2 Chronicles 28:7). 5. Governor of Jerusalem during the reign of Josiah (2 Chronicles 34:8). 6. Father of false prophet Zedekiah (Jeremiah 29:21). 7. Father of the priest Zephaniah (Jeremiah 21:1; Jeremiah 29:25; Jeremiah 37:3). 8. Temple doorkeeper (Jeremiah 35:4). 9. Postexilic resident of Jerusalem from tribe of Judah (Nehemiah 11:5), likely identical with Asaiah (1 Chronicles 9:5). 10. Benjaminite ancestor of some returned exiles (Nehemiah 11:7). 11.-14. Names of three priests and one layman in Ezra's time who had taken foreign wives (Ezra 10:18,Ezra 10:21-22,Ezra 10:30). 15. Father/ancestor of the Azariah participating in Nehemiah's rebuilding of the wall (Nehemiah 3:23). 16. Chief of the people who signed Ezra's covenant (Nehemiah 10:25), possibly identical with 14 and/or 18. 17. One of those standing beside Ezra at the reading of the law (Nehemiah 8:4), possibly 14 and/or 16. 18. One of the Levites interpreting the law which Ezra read (Nehemiah 8:7), possibly identical with 17. 19. Priest participating in the dedication of the rebuilt walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 12:41), perhaps identical with 11, 12, or 13. 20. Another priest participating in the dedication, perhaps identical with 11, 12, or 13. 21. KJV form for Mahseiah. See Mahseiah.
