(mak' tehssh) KJV transliteration of the Hebrew place name meaning, “Mortar” (NAS, NRSV). District in or near Jerusalem (Zephaniah 1:11). Early commentators located the site in the Kidron Valley. Recently, the site has been linked with an area of the Tyropoean Valley within the city walls (thus “lower town,” REB; “market district,” NIV).
