One translation of the Greek word karphos (“speck” in NRSV, NAS, NIV, TEV, REB). Jesus used the word in His Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 7:3-5) to illustrate hypocrisy, equating mote with the smallest particle of wood in contrast to a log or beam. Some older translations use “twig” or “straw.”
