(ass' sshuhr) ASSHURIM, ASSHURITES (NIV) Personal and national name. 1. Son of Shem and thus a Semite, as were the Hebrew people (Genesis 10:22). 2. An otherwise unknown Arabian tribe (Genesis 25:3). This tribe may also be meant in Balaam's oracle (Numbers 24:22-24), but a reference to Assyria is more likely. 3. The nation Assyria and its inhabitants are generally meant by the Hebrew term Asshur.
