AZARIAH

(az uh ri' ah) Personal name meaning, “Yahweh has helped.” 1. Son and successor of Amaziah as king of Judah (792-740 B.C.). Also called Uzziah. See Uzziah. 2. High priest under Solomon (1 Kings 4:2) listed as son of Zadok (1 Kings 4:2) or of Ahimaaz (1 Chronicles 6:9), the son of Zadok (2 Samuel 15:27). If the latter is accurate, then son in 1 Kings 4:2 means descendant. 3. Son of Nathan in charge of the system of obtaining provisions for the court from the twelve government provinces (1 Kings 4:5). He would have supervised the persons listed in 1 Kings 4:7-19. 4. Great grandson of Judah (1 Chronicles 2:8). 5. A member of the clan of Jerahmeel in the tribe of Judah (1 Chronicles 2:38-39). 6. High priest, son of Johanan (1 Chronicles 6:10). 7. High priest, son of Hilkiah (1 Chronicles 6:13-14) and father of Seraiah, who is listed as Ezra's father (Ezra 7:1). The list in Ezra is not complete. Apparently some generations have been omitted. 8. Member of family of Kohath, the Temple singers (1 Chronicles 6:36). Apparently called Uzziah in 1 Chronicles 6:24. 9. A priest, son of Hilkiah (1 Chronicles 9:11) may be same as 7. above. 10. Prophet, son of Oded, whose message gave King Asa (910-869 B.C.) courage to restore proper worship in Judah (2 Chronicles 15:1-8). 11. Two sons of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah (873-848 B.C.) according to 2 Chronicles 21:2. Perhaps the boys had different mothers, each of whom gave the son the common name Azariah. 12. Son of Jehoram, king of Judah (852-841) according to 2 Chronicles 22:6, but the correct name is probably Ahaziah as in 2 Kings 8:29. Azariah represents a copyist's error in Chronicles. 13. Two military commanders of 100 men who helped Jehoiada, the high priest, depose and murder Athaliah as queen of Judah and install Joash as king (835-796). 14. High priest who led 80 priests to oppose King Uzziah of Judah (792-740) when he tried to burn incense in the Temple rather than let the priests. God struck Uzziah with a dreaded skin disease (2 Chronicles 26:16-21). 15. A leader of the tribe of Ephraim under Pekah, king of Israel (752-732 B.C.), who rescued captives Pekah had taken from Judah, cared for their physical needs, and returned them to Jericho (2 Chronicles 28:5-15). 16. A Levite whose son Joel helped cleanse the Temple under Hezekiah, king of Judah (715-686) (2 Chronicles 29:12-19). 17. A Levite who helped cleanse the Temple (2 Chronicles 29:12-19). See 16. above. 18. Chief priest under King Hezekiah who rejoiced with the king over the generous tithes and offerings of the people (2 Chronicles 31:10-13). 19. Son of Meraioth in the list of high priests and father of Amariah (Ezra 7:3) Since list in Ezra is incomplete, this Azariah may be same as 6. above. 20. Helper of Nehemiah in rebuilding wall of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 3:23). 21. Man who returned from Exile with Zerubbabel (Nehemiah 7:7) about 537 B.C. He is called Seraiah in Ezra 2:2. 22. Man who helped Ezra interpret the law to the people in Jerusalem (Nehemiah 8:7). 23. Man who put his seal on Nehemiah's covenant to obey God's law (Nehemiah 10:2). 24. A leader of Judah, possibly a priest, who marched with Nehemiah and others on the walls of Jerusalem to celebrate the completion of rebuilding the city defense walls (Nehemiah 12:33). He may be identical with any one or all of 20.-23. above. 25. Friend of Daniel renamed Abednego by Persian officials. God delivered him from the fiery furnace (Daniel 1:7; Daniel 4:1-30). See Abednego; Daniel. 26. Son of Hoshaiah and leader of Jewish people who tried to get Jeremiah to give them a word from God directing them to go to Egypt after the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem. When Jeremiah said not to go, they accused him of lying (Jeremiah 42:1-43:7). Hebrew text reads Jezaniah in Jeremiah 42:1.
